there are only 2 things that are mechanical and would make noise which are the fan and the dvd. that sound makes me think its the dvd, possibly a gear or motor issue, but without looking inside its hard to tell, if its new i would exchange it.
I play DVDS in my xbox all the time, and it never makes that noise. However, when i play games, it does.:? So Im thinking its the fan.

Yeah, if you're the third person just sitting there while two people are going to town on eachother, I wouldn't like it. If they were two people i didn't really know, i'd walk by them and make some sort of clever quip.
