[QUOTE="daqua_99"]I agree with the TC. Thing is, I think that 'graphics' as a heading is important and is incorperated into the gameplay. Sure, I don't buy games for graphics being outstanding (I own a Wii), but good graphics can help set the atmosphere which is needed for the story to fit right. daqua_99

I would say that the only thing that matters about graphics is the art style segment of them... in a technical sense I do not see how they set an atmosphere. for example the best story I have seen in a game (planescape: torment) took place in a world that was fitting from an art style standpoint but was entirely 2d...

Thing is 'graphics' involves everything you see on the screen. You don't have any graphics in a game and the screen will be black. I'm saying that the graphics are necessary in a game. Sure, I don't think that graphics need to be super-great like some games are now, but they are needed in games for one reason or another.

Without graphics in a game there will only be one black screen.

you have a point there I suppose... but even games with no graphics besides text (text-based adventure games) have been amazing and even some of the greatest ever...

[QUOTE="farrell2k"]Blah Blah Blah. Every console since the inception of consoles has touted graphics as the main driving force behind them. Except the wii, of corse, I can't wait to see how that turns out.Zeliard9

This is true. Even the SNES was bragged about as this amazing "16-bit console", and when the gen after that came around we heard nothing but "32 bit, 32 bit, 32 bit". Graphics (as a combination of both technology and art style) have always been critical, not as important as gameplay, but still critical. It's why if you look at any "greatest games of all-time" list, almost all the games you'll find were graphical showcases in their time. That's no coincidence.

have you ever tried playing some of the games out around the time Fallout was released man??

Do you think bioshock, uncharted, or any other big story telling games would be able to tell the story the same way with basic 3d models and basic sounds?Thompsonwhore

uncharted is a big story telling game?? how do you know if it is not out yet... anyway what does sound have to do with this I said that sound is great and should advance... graphics outside of art ****are meaningless on the other hand because all they do is drive the budget through the roof. Bioshock could have been done just as well with basic 3d or even 2d if it was properly handled... good developers know how to make the most of what they have.

[QUOTE="FlockofSpagheti"]graphics have nothing to do with sound dude... sound is great graphics are pointless.Thompsonwhore

So we should have 7.1 lossless surround sound but basic 3d models are okay?

That doesn't sound idiotic at all. Not a bit.

I would rather have 2d but basic 3d is fine too...

A game with pretty graphics but bad gameplay is a bad game.

A game with ugly graphics but good gameplay is a good game.

But a game with great graphics and great gameplay is a great game.

Visuals are as much of a part of the presentation of a game now as everything else.

Visuals, sounds, voice-acting, atmosphere, animation.

Games are about more than just gameplay these days.

Thompsonwhore

they are more than gameplay... but graphics is not part of that. story and characters and sound et al... but not graphics.

Oh god. I'm so tired of people saying graphics aren't important.

If that's the way you feel, then let us all start begging for basic 3d models and MIDI sounds, shall we?

graphics have nothing to do with sound dude... sound is great graphics are pointless.

Although i will say I could greatly enjoy a game with sub-par graphics for great game-play, but i disagree that graphics don't matter.

IT would be a travesty for someone to release a game with great game-play but Golden-eye 007 (N64) Graphics in 2007.

Graphics immerse people into a game which makes you feel like escaping reality for a bit. The More reality involved the more it works.

Reneg4de

I was more immersed in this:

than this:

So the advancement of technology is a bad thing? If a game has only good graphics...ie lair it blows but if it has graphics and gameplay then its a great game.Lemmywinks_360

there is a difference between the advancement of technology and pushing graphics forward faster than they should be... Miyamoto saw it and wanted to make the Wii $100 with no real graphics capabilities but Nintendo forced a bit more than that... the 360 and Ps3 are just ridiculous.

and no one cares... no one responds because they are fine with graphics killing gaming as long as they have something to look at on the way to the bottom.

no, developers can release games on Live Arcade for example.

For all I care they can spend 100 million dollars to give me 15 hours of entertainment.

BlueBarad

that additude is killing gaming...
