Now that the cat's out of the bag regarding the release of Nintendo's new console for some time next year, can we expect to see rather rapid price drops for the Wii until then? Nintendo will likely be tryin to clear out their remaining inventory over the course of the next year or so, so I could definitely see the Wii going as low as 130-150$ by Christmas time. It's already selling for 169$ at Best Buy here in Canada...

Lets see this for what it is. The release of the Kinect and Move by Microsoft and Sony pretty much took eliminated whatever made the Wii interesting and unique to begin with, which was motion sensored controls. Not only do 360 and PS3 owners have access to this technology as well now, but they can also do it in HD with a much larger (and better) variety of games to choose from. Nintendo rode the wave of their gimmick for a good 5 years, but unfortunately reality is starting to sink in.

Pretty annoying if you ask me. Had Nintendo actually released the Wii as a HD console, then this wouldn't even be a discussion right now. It was just a matter of time before it's technological limitations ended up catching up with them, especailly after Sony and Microsoft introduced motion sensored technology of their own. I'm also somewhat skeptical that this new console will be released a tad prematurely. I understand that both Sony and Microsoft have committed themselves to their respective consoles for at least 3 more years, but you'd have to think when they finally do introduce new consoles that they'll be considerably more advanced than the "Wii 2" will be at that time. In any case, we know that whatever Nintendo releases pretty much turns to gold either way (financially that is) so I'm sure the Wii 2 will be no different.

Almost 11 years on the market (and counting), with over 147 million units sold worldwide. THe PS2has likely established itself as the most succesful video game console of all time. Numbers aside though, what feature(s) made the PS2 stand out above the competition, and what helped it experience such an incredibly long lifespan? Was it the DVD feature? The strong 3rd party support and massive library of games? The backwards compatability?

Personally, I'd have to say it was all of the above combined. But what 1 aspect really made it as special as it was?

I know men well into their 40's with full-time careers and families, but are still very much into gaming. It has evolved into much more than a past-time for kids and teenagers. I'm 28 years old myself, and although I'mnot into gaming as much as I was in my younger days (mainly due to time constraints), I still very much enjoy playing through a good survival horror, FPS, or sports game every now and then. The market for gaming has expanded immensly over the past decade, and there's nothing at all wrong with full-grown adults being into it!

What made this year as special as it was was the great mix of first party and 3rd party titles. It was particularly refreshing to see 3rd party developers finally get their act together in regards to producing solid titles for the Wii on a consistent basis. Hopefully this is a sign of thigns to come, as I don't think the Wii can survive another 2-3 years if it's gonna rely solely on 1st party titles to carry it through.

I still think that WaW is the best of the bunch. MW didn't have the same addictive qualities in my opinion.

Yet not PS2 games? I really don't understand what their reasoning would be to remove backwards compatability with PS2 games. I'm assume it saved them $$$ on manufacturing costs?

BattleSpectre

you know why... because the ps2 still sells for them..

This.

All that crap they tried to pull on us: "We couldn't afford it at the time etc." was all a joke. The PS2 still sells and people are still buying it. Backwards compatibility would taken all that away, and Sony sure as hell didn't want that.

It depends really. I mean, for them to set the price of the Slim down to $299, they surely had to make some sacrifices in terms of manufacturing costs in the process. Besides, I don't really think PS2 consoles are really still selling as much as you may think they are. Eventually, every console runs out of steam, even if it is the hottest selling one of all time.

I must say though that I am pretty ticked that my slim doesn't have backwards compatability with PS2 games. I got a sick PS2 library, and it would've been pretty convenient to be able to just pop them into my PS3. I could also care less for the Blu-Ray player.Oh well, at least I didn't make the mistake of selling my PS2 :D

I was leaning towards Killzone 2 as well. I can get it brand new for pretty cheap these days, and of the 3 titles I've researched, KZ2 seems to have gotten the best overall feedback. I'm not a big time online gamer, so I'd primarily be looking for something that offers solid campaign gameplay. It's also one of the reasons as to why i'm not too keen on getting Black Ops either, as I've read that the single player campaign is pretty short...
