Rage made me mad!

Just did a little review for the GameSpot community based on my experiences on the recently released console port for PC, Rage.

Rage is a first-person shooter from Bethesda set in the not-too-distant future where an asteroid impacts Earth, leaving a ravaged world behind. Appeared to a awesome game although as usual PC ports are it lacked graphic consistency and had several annoying issues.

The storyline was a much anticipated release and seemed incredibly interesting although after playing it for a few hours a few noticeable issues continually popped up. The idea and the intention made it to a must buy although i really regret not holding off for the discount bin or half price sale.

If you haven't got anything better to do give it a crack but i wouldn't be wasting to much on an experience that was hindered by poor graphic support, objects that never load and just not the quality your would suspect from AAA titled game.

Rage definitely lives up to the name by making to be rage!

Breakthrough may lead to limitless supply of hydrogen fuel

Thought this was a really interesting article. Hope you enjoy the read

If a new technology pans out, the fading notion that hydrogen will someday supplant fossil fuels may be on the verge of a comeback.

There was a time in the early 90's when the fuel cell was touted as the clean energy technology of the future. The only byproduct was water and it also packed a whole lot more energy than electric car batteries. For instance, nine pounds of the stuff was enough to enable a vehicle to go 150 miles. However, methods to generate hydrogen ware in and of itself an energy intensive. And ultimately, the concept of needing energy to produce energy was problematic enough to make it a dealbreaker for many green investors.

But now researchers at Penn state have demonstrated an innovative "self-powered" process of producing hydrogen that, if scalable, can revive interest in fuel cell technology.

What enables the technique to work is the clever integration of bacteria, seawater and fresh water. In 2009, researchers discovered that special bacteria called microbial electrolysis cells can break down wastewater to release hydrogen, though it still needed a slight jolt of electricity to get the process going.

They eventually turned to a separate process known as reverse-electrodialysis or RED, which is similar to desalination, except run in reverse. The logic goes something like this: extracting the salt from seawater requires quite a bit of energy, so bringing the two back together would release energy that can be used to give the little bugs a kick start.

"If you think about desalinating water, it takes energy, Bruce E. Logan, a professor of environmental engineering, told the BBC. "If you have a freshwater and saltwater interface, that can add energy. We realized that just a little bit of that energy could make this process go on its own."

Logan's cells were between 58 and 64 percent efficient and produced between 0.8 to 1.6 cubic meters of hydrogen for every cubic meter of liquid run through the cell each day. The researchers estimated that only about 1 percent of the energy produced in the cell was needed to pump water through the system.

The findings were published in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

So far, this approach has only been demonstrated successfully in the lab. To scale up this technology, the researchers proposed running seawater and river water through a stack of alternating cathode and anode exchange membranes.

"This system could produce hydrogen anyplace that there is wastewater near sea water. It uses no grid electricity and is completely carbon neutral," Logan said. "It is an inexhaustible source of energy."

War of the Consoles

By Summer 2009 the video games industry had entered a interesting and unusual stage in its development. The industry had been dominated by Sony during 1995 and 2006, whose playstation had accounted for well over half of world console sales during the previous two product generations.

However in the new generation of the gaming consoles a new situation arrised. What was once believed to be a winner take all market is now a three way battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo with only minute differences in market share. Now what is really interesting is in terms of unit sales Wii was the outright winner.

The emergence of Nintendo as the new market leader after several years of lagging as a weak third to Sony and Microsoft was a major reversal of fortune. Most had written off Nintendo as a serious competitor. .

As the Console companies product development teams prepare for the next console generation who do you think will come out on top?

The Performance Review: Alienware m17xR3

Myth: Laptops run hot when gaming so you can't play for long periods of time? Now even through peak performance the m17xR3 Alienware Gaming laptop runs stably and not too hot but you will definitely hear the back fans pumping at full speed to make sure the system is stable. If you're going to be doing marathon gaming it may be recommended to get a laptop cooling dock to make sure everything stays cool.

Now like other products from Dell and Alienware it comes with pre-installed software and applications that seem to like to steal memory and processing power while doing absolutely nothing. For those of you who aren't Tech Savvy checkout GameBooster which helps to minimise background applications and increase performance. If you're knowledgeable enough do a reformat after initial boot up to get rid of the junk and not to mention McAFee security system which is one of the worst paid Antivirus protections out there. This made me quite disappointed when I went through the laptop for the first time as when you think about a gaming laptop you want to have maximise performance and detail not a bunch of software that is associated in some way or another with dell. It may be a suggestion to Dell to have a preloaded gaming profile on the computer to allow ease of use from the begginning and still have the support of the other programs.

The Mission Control (Alien FX, Fusion and Touch) which is one of the main selling points has quite a few fun features that allow you to fully personalise and customise your gaming machine. AlienFX gives you the option of changing the lighting options of the sections of the laptop which include 4 sections of keyboard, icons, touch pad and cooling vents.

There is also the pulsing option which is available but it makes you feel quite sickly due to constant flashing. AlienFusion allows you to decide where you want the power to go. So do you want performance, Power management or just general usage? The choice is yours with this feature. AlienTouch allows you to change the sensitivity settings of the touch pad as well as turning on a bumpcontrol setting so that the touch pad doesn't pick up movement while certain applications are used.

I also had several issues with the ATI drivers and software for the graphics card which meant that it took quite a bit of fiddling around with the power and performance settings to make sure everything was fine tuned. For future products Alienware really needs to step up the mark when it comes too built in content. Once everything was setup i had some really remarkable performance.

There were several games that I used to test this Laptop which include RUSE, Splintercell: Conviction, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Each of these games showed different situations of how the laptop performed. The laptop also scored a 17597 during 3DMarks06 performance test which is awesome and shows you how it compares to others in the market like the Asus GT780r which scored under 16000.

The m17xR3 is a Laptop that is the best at any time and any place. This beast of portability will provide owners with alien like skill upgrade. Not only is it kitted to kill but you will also be able to get ahead of your competition. Although this laptop has a lot to offer you, you also have to consider the fact that you are paying a price premium for the logo and extras which is quite extreme especially when you it compare it other gaming laptops in the market. It is also a gaming laptop that is made for someone just short of a computer expert who needs to know at least the bare basics of computer hardware and software. If this sounds like you and you got the budget to fork out for this beast, definitely think about it as it will give you all benefits of a desktop gaming pc and the portability of a laptop.

Alienware Arsenal M17xR3 Review: Part 1

Gaming just got alienated with the performance of this gaming Laptop.

Alienware is known for its exceeding performance in gaming equipment with the injection of the latest technology into a highly customised device. Alienware is Dells gaming brand of accessories and gaming grade computers. This Gaming Laptop is designed tp provide the most immerse mobile gaming experience in the universe and the question is does it live up to these expectations?

So what's under the hood of this spacecraft? The alienware m17xr3 has the 2nd generation i7-2720M processor which will give you the ability to perform in the latest games. The laptop that was received had the latest mobile graphics card from ATI, the 6970M which will bypass the base benchmarks of any new releases. If I was to ever purchase another product from Alienware I wouldn't chose ATI due to their poor driver support and performance prepared to nVidia. It does come down to personal preferences but when you want to be playing at your peak on games the last thing you want is a graphics card driver underperforming or giving you undesirable lag.

Laptop

The m17xR3 has 8 GB of memory which increases overall performance and enables your computer to run more applications at the same time. This will help with making sure that you never get chocked on performance due to hidden programs or the operating system hogging too much memory. The laptop comes standard with Windows 7 Home premium and a 1.5 TB Hard drive that allows you to store all your needed files, media and games. If this isn't enough to satisfy your gaming needs you can always go overboard with upgrading to 16GB of ram or dual raid SSD's if you want to go past the extreme.

The laptop looks amazing and the screen helps maximise this. The m17xR3 gives you the ultimate viewing experience on a 17" monitor. When the laptop arrived I was star struck with the presentation and how huge the laptop screen looked. The screen does help with providing you with an awesome gaming environment but there's a big negative with it. The alienware laptop emphasises on its portability but the glare you get off the screen is pretty horrid, making this laptop only good for inside gameplay. This isn't saying that you can't take it outside and game in the sun but it makes it rather irritating as you will miss critical moments due to the screens reflection. If you're only looking at inside gaming and travelling then this shouldn't be a problem and rather a benefit since the screen is really easy to clean.

So how big is the laptop? The dimensions on the laptop differ when you choose the different models but the base model is nearly 17" wide 12" long and depending on what side you look at it the height varies around 1.5" to 2". This is quite a high laptop in my experiences. When I was thoroughly testing I found it rather high from a traditional keyboard which meant getting used to the inbuilt keyboard was difficult. It's still reasonable to use but what I ended up doing is connecting my old Microsoft Sidewinder keyboard up. The sides of the Alien machine provide a lot of different connectivity options for all your technological add-ons. The laptop gives you the option of 5 USB ports (2x 3.0, 1 eSATA combination USB and 2x 2.0) that give you the option of connecting everything you need to. There are several display port options which provide VGA and HDMI connections if you're someone who likes to hook up to the big screen or if the 17" model is just not big enough for you. There is also several other ports which include your headset and microphone ports, Media card reader, Gigabyt Ethernet conections and DVD drive. There are no ports in the back of the Laptop except for the powersupply jack which allows for the best ventilation.

Having the best equipment jammed into a laptop means that you will be surprised at the weight of the Alienware m17xR3. This laptop should not be taken "lightly" as it weighs in at over 5kg depending on what you add to your setup. For a uni student like myself I found it rather a burden to travel with when walking to tutorial's as it limits your ability to travel around quickly between areas. After a day of travelling with it, it definitely confirmed that this isn't really an easy to lug around laptop. For those of you are constantly on the move this will mean that you will have a extra possible 6kg in the bag on top of books, notes and stationary. If you're just going from home and to the office it should be good solution for gaming on the go.
