Games of E3

With all of the hype going on right now, it's difficult to not get swept up. Game announcements, reveals, and screenshots seem to be flying out of the intertubes, and it is getting difficult to keep everything organized.

So here's a list of everything I am looking at from this year's E3.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

Not only am I a huge fan of the original and Rearmed, but I am still considering renting or trading to get the remake. Yeah, I've heard that it sucks, but I still am itching to try it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Although I'm not a big fan of Treyarch games, I'm willing to track this one, and see how the previews and (hopefully) demo go.

Conduit 2

The original is a fun game, and it was worth the trade. I'll either trade for this one too, or wait until the game is around $20-30.

Crackdown 2

Although the first game passed me by, this second one looks interesting. Perhaps it's the generic-looking space-marine-esque armor that is attracting me.

Crysis 2

OMG. I don't need to explain this one. If you haven't played the original on a good computer, then you've missed out on the latest generation in visuals. Nothing the consoles can do can compare to this beauty, and I can't wait to see the sequel in action.

Dead Rising 2

I'm on the fence about this one. Maybe I should finish the original before I begin thinking about the second iteration.

Dead Space 2

I lovedlovedloved the first one. Yeah, it got a little repetitive in the middle, but overall it was a great game.

Deus Ex 3

The first game: brilliant. The second: mediocre. I'm still willing to give this one a try, in honor of the original's gameplay.

Epic Mickey

I can't lie; I'm intrigued by Warren Spector meets the mouse.

F.E.A.R. 3

I can't say the premise of divergent co-op with the brother that your character killed is intruiging. Nor can I claim that the mystery of the second game's protagonist has been solved. That being said, I'll probably give this game a look-see.

Fallout: New Vegas

Although I haven't beaten Fallout 3 yet, this is on my radar in case I end up enjoying it.

Gears of War 3

Again, although I still have to complete number two, this game has caught me eye.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

I loved the Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter series, so this game should be a natural enjoyment.

Halo: Reach

I loved this storyline from the novels. Here's hoping the gameplay lives up to the story.

Homefront

I'm so excited about this, I already wrote a blog dedicated to it.

Kid Icarus: Uprising

The original--for some reason or another--has become a cult classic. I might check this iteration out, but we'll see. The graphics don't impress me much.

Killzone 3

One of the few games that makes me want to own a PS3.

Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4

I LOVE the Lego games. Then again, maybe I should finish Lego Indiana Jones and buy and complete Lego Batman before I jump on this ship.

Lord of the Rings War in the North

I'm a sucker for all things Lord of the Rings.

Medal of Honor

I enjoyed Allied Assault more than Call of Duty. Yeah, I said it.

Metroid: Other M

Eventually, I will own this game. I still haven't beaten Super Metroid or any of the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Portal 2

I don't think I need to state a reason here.

Rabbids Travel In Time

Maybe I'll rent this. I enjoyed the Rabbids in the first Rayman Raving Rabbids game on the Wii.

Rock Band 3

Yes, please. Keyboard is meh.

Rush n' Attack: Ex-Patriot

LOVED the original game on the NES. It was soooo hard that it brought pride to me when I could get further than any of my friends.

Silent Hill 6

Maybe

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2

I still have to buy and complete the first game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Yes, please.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

LOVED the first game. It is officially one of the best games I have ever played.

Tron Legacy

The only thing that sucks about this game is that it is not slated to come out on the PC, unlike Tron 2.0 from a few years back (which was great).

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War started my love obsession with this series. Too bad the sequel (despite all it's hype and number of people playing it) sucked.

Vanquish

From the dudes who made Resident Evil. This game looks bad-ass.

The Toadies New AlbumS

That's right, I capitalized the "s" for a reason. My favorite band, the Toadies, are putting out two records in the next twelve months!

Back after their album "Rubberneck" (featuring their radio hit "Possum Kingsom") they recorded a follow-up album called "Feeler" which was rejected by their label. Well, the Toadies are currently re-recording that album for release this summer. Following a brief tout, they will return to the studio this winter to record new songs. Kick. Ass.

Quick Thoughts on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky

Going into this game, I heard nothing but "bugs, bugs, bugs." I'm happy to report that while I'm only an hour or so into the game, I haven't encountered a bug yet.

The graphics are beautiful, in all of their Direct X 10.1 glory, and I'm happy to see that the STALKER Clear Sky Complete mod further enchances their beauty.

I like the faction alliance feature, where you gain or lose reputation with different factions according to your actions. Choose your allies carefully.

This game also seems to explain its predecessor well, as I'm beginning to understand more about its story, background, and setting.

I'm playing it on novice, and still finding the beginning difficult, as I have already run out of ammunition for my assault rifle. It's back to shotguns and pistols for now.

Update v.5.27.2010

I've begun using Raptr to help track my gaming habits and serve as an IM client because Xfire is rather limited in the IM areas. I feel retarded running both at the same time, but I don't think that Raptr updates X-fire's profile, and I like knowing how many hours I've given to a particular game.

I'm about 45% of the way through The Conduit, and I'm still enjoying it. It's definitely worth playing, though I would suggest renting it instead of buying it. I also started S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky tonight, and am playing it with the Clear Sky Complete mod. It shines up the graphics, adds more atmosphere, etc. Direct X 10 is so awesome to see on my screen, in its 1600x1200 resolution... all bright and crisp. It's a far cry from The Conduit's Wii visuals. I also finally completed the adventure portion of Plants vs. Zombies. Awesome game and probably the best $10 I've ever spent on entertainment.

It's 87 here in Detroit, and we popped on the air conditioner. Hooray.

I went on a field trip today with my older daughter. We visited a rock quarry. Running around with six second graders was a little tiring, but it was definitely better than going to work today. I can't wait for summer vacation.

Update v.5.17.2010

I had a decent day at work today. The students weren't TOO poorly behaved, and I feel they learned pretty well. Then the end of the day hit, and I learned that a friend of mine (another teacher) died. **** I won't go into the reasons for his death because it involves office politics (and I can never be sure who googles me), but damn... it's pretty messed up.

In the meantime, I'm uploading a video of myself teaching, in order to improve my mad skillz. Maybe later I'll play some Plants versus Zombies or The Conduit. Or maybe I'll play some more Hellgate: London.

Quick Impressions of The Conduit

I've been playing The Conduit for the past couple of days, and I have to say it's enticing. While it's not exactly in the ranks of OMGIHAVETOPLAYNOW!, I definitely find myself pulling out the Wiimote and nunchuk after a night of watching TV with my wife. The controlls are pretty good, the story is passable, but it has the perfect difficulty level for an old man like me. The enemies aren't overly difficult, and I usually can get through half a level or so before I die. And when I die, it's often because of something stupid that I did. I'm currently about 30% of the way through the single player campaign, and I can see myself finishing it soon. Surprisingly, given the reviews of both games, I'm liking this game alot more than House of the Dead 2: Overkill. Yeah, overall, it's a good game, at least worth renting.

Impressions of Deus Ex: Invisible War

Positives

  1. it still has the Deus Ex multiple paths to complete your objective level design
  2. it reduces inventory managment problems by allowing you to carry twelve items of any size at all times
  3. ammo is easier to manage, as each gun uses the same type
  4. hacking with multitools is still fun
  5. it still has the Deus Ex multiple factions to join/screw over storyline

Negatives

  1. simultaneous X-box and PC design means the game is restricted in its memory usage. I see a loading screen everytime I enter a building or exit a building. Not cool.
  2. unimpressive graphics for its age
  3. less compelling story
