First off Ive been playing ea sports basketball games since Lakers vs Celtics, I'm not biased and will not naively say that NBA live hasn't had its down years. But this year's NBA live is finally the product that NBA live 94-04 were the dark years of NBA live 05-07 seem to be gone. Last year's NBA Live was just the beginning of the rebuilding process.
I played 2k9, and its the same game as 2k7, 2k7 was a great game, while NBA live 07 was absolutely unplayable. 2k8 was the same as 2k7 however and NBA live 08 wasn't as good but on the rebound. NBA 2k9 isn't bad, its good but its the same and hasn't any BOLDnew features that separates it from NBA live 09 which this year has closed the gap.
*The New DNA feature which forces the AI and User to play like their real-life counterpart is awesome because it updates every-game so Kobe Bryant if he has a God awful year this season the AI and Users won't have last year's stats to rely on, the DNA adjust his tendencies and stats accordingly daily, not monthly.
*NBA live's new total controlled pick and roll feature makes you feel you are Steve Nash and CP3 when the play breaks down with the ability to control the pg and the screener (roll, fade, or pop)
* And finally with EA sports realizing they probably aren't going to buy Take Two and takeover the 2k series they have finally decided to re-focus their efforts to rebuilding their lost hold on the NBA gaming franchise, so instead of envying their neighbor's lawn they are finally focusing on making their own lawn green again. (which had be bare dirt since 2005 LOL)
All in all NBA 2k9 is like the heavyweight champ it has been for 3 years and counting and hasn't had been knocked out or even challenged by its competition until this year. NBA 2k9 is based on the mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" concept and who can blame them? If your left hook keeps you wearing the belt why work on a jab?
But with that same notion eventually people catch on to that left hook and anticipate it, and what has happened this year is that NBA Live, after 3 years LOL, has finally caught on. The gameplay is finally there, NBA live still needs to tweak the CPU and USER AI defense and rebounding, especially in transition defense. But all the players tendencies, styles, and game modes are there.
This year isn't the year NBA Live reclaims the title, this year is the year that 2k9 can no longer say they are better, but like any heavyweight champ, NBA Live will have to knock NBA 2k out 2k with its revised gameplay and new features in order to be champ again, otherwise the decision will always go to the champ and it should.
So by default I give NBA 2k9 the edge, not because NBA live is worse, but because this is the first year NBA live is a real challenger.By all-star break (Feb 2009) when the DNA mode is in full swing will we see if the NBA live's adjustment to NBA 2k's left hook of consistency was well worth the effort.
Personally at this point I like NBA live better, its fresh, its new, and reborn. NBA 2k9 is the same, the same and no different; not worse just the same game through and through for 3 years now.

How on earth is 2k9 the same as 2k8? Its WAY WAY better. Much more realistic and the controls are ALOT deeper. Much more defense is needed, unlike 2k8.
NBA 2k9 is the best basketball game ive ever played.
Sure NBA LIVE is getting better, but its still light years behind 2k sports for basketball.
NBA LIVE is still a friggin dunk contest basiaclly for crying out loud. If you enjoy dunking every time down the court then NBA LIVE is for you. If you like realism then go for 2k9.
Kozzy you said before that it wasn't a dunk fest. Now it is?
"Its the best NBA LIVE since 1999 imo.
The defense is finally on its way back, and im glad ot say its not a dunk fest every time down the court now in live 09 (at least with the demo).
I was a huge nba live fan in teh 90's but i havnt enjoyed any of the nba live games in close to ten years. Finally EA has learned that we want REALISTIC basketball, not dunk fests.
I might end up getting both 2k9 and Nba live 09.
Its nto perfect, but its finally looking liek EA might be getting there act together as far as NBA LIVE goes."
Its the BEST NBA LIVE in years yes, its still way to easy to dunk. NOT AS EASY TO DUNK THOUGH AS LAST YEARS version is what i meant to say.
NBA Live is on the way up and improving, but its still to weak on the defensive end. When compared to 2k9, NBA LIVE 09 still doesnt have good enough defense, hopefully next year they full get the defense down right.
Like i said before, its a big improvement over the last few years and its not AS BAD of a dunk fest as last year, but i still NEED more defense man, just my opinion.
Last few years NBA LIVE i was dunking 90% of the time downt he court. With this years version its about 65% of the timethat i score with a dunk. On NBA 2k9 its a dunk maybe35% of the time.
I think good defense wins championships in the NBA and thats what i need in my basketball videogames to be honest.
Well i like how the dude says how is 2k9 the same as 2k8! The controls are deeper and you need more D and its more realistic. First off its not more realistic and second would you go man 2k9 is a huge improvement over 2k8 cuz the controls are better and you need to play D. PErsonally D is boringSo i would say if you have 2K8 go with Live cuz Live is way better but still a little behind 2k but if you have not played a 2k basketball game go with that! Anyway Live is like a 8/10 and 2k is a 8.5/10 but i think if 2k stays the same then live will be better next year!
