FF 13 is the 3rd most successful Final Fantasy from official sales
(If people are wondering why 3 FF13 games have been released)
Also FF Lightning Returns got a 37/40 rating at Famitsu.
Also it has sold 400,000 in japan (end of 2013 stats)
So yes FF Lightning returns has been doing extremely well in Japan.
Here the game received many 7/10 for its controversial timer mechanic
DETAILS:
The game has an internal Doomsday clock of 3 days. They even have a clock tower like Majora's mask.
If you dont succeed the world ends, and you can try again while keeping the same stats & weapons you collected in the first playthrough.
Also the game is open world so you can visit any place by monorail (It has 4 big islands)
The game has Easy & Normal difficulties (Think it is more as Normal & Hard)
You can only level up from sidequests, not random battles (the enemies are visible)
This is to prevent grinding from random battles.
Also if you escape from battles -> the clock advances 1 hour ahead. So dont do Gamespot escapes and then blame the clock & the timer mechanic.
VERDICT: Timer Mechanic is controversial like in Majora's Mask. Here if you fail you can try again with upgraded stuff, so there is no problem, and the game's open world helps you more if you get bored
Bottom line, if you like JRPGS & Lightning -> buy game asap
If you hate Lightning as Gamespot does -> 5/10 review
