I am getting caught up on the old FF games. I have just put FF1 on my PSP, and also FFIII/VI. Is there any reason I should play the first one, and do the FF games have to be in order? FFVI seems cool....

Yes and no. I'd love a FFVII remake but definitely NOT as a handheld.
A graphic intensive game would be awful with their loading time, like Y's: Ark of Napishtim for the PSP. It looks great but the fact that it has to load for everything (world map, towns, going in or out of the house) is ridiculous, almost more than 10 to 15 seconds everytime.
It all depends on the optimization of the game, too. Also, the loading times would be super fast if they just released a firmware that allowed processor speed control. 333 mhz would eat load times for breakfast. Right now the PSP is clocked down to 2/3 of it's full potential and only runs at 222 mhz.....:(
Thanks for the advice. They are my first FF games other than X(didn't have time to finish)......I will contact if I need help. Yeah, I have XP and a 2 ghz proc.....I wonder if I should use my 256 MB gfx card or the integrated video.....
