Blu ray made by sony, its patented. no one can use it like microsoft without sony's permission. for buying a ps3, its a gift from sony at a cheap price. well the ps3 is not that cheap lol but still it is advantageous to buy a ps3, because it is the main player people will buy instead of a stand alone player since it has other features as well

just imagine people asking for a 300$ ps3 or lower lol. The 600 pound player u saw, has write capability also that's why it is expensive, ps3 blu ray can only read not write disks. thats the main reason for difference in price variation. so ps3 player is pretty good but it cannot write disks so its probably doesnt cost as much for sony to incorporate in ps3.
