ps2 is definately worth the purchase even if your not thinking about ps3. There are plenty of excelent games that I'm sure I don't have to mention that make the ps2 worth while. Thought, if I did have to mention games I would probably talk about gran tourismo, guilty gear, suikoden 4 and 5 and tactics (im sure some will disagree) Final Fantasy X-XII, DDR if your into that, Guitar Hero I-II and the list goes on a long way.

I thought the gambit system was actually pretty interesting, gettting to program your chars minds almost littereally.

The licence system was stupid though, because you need a licence to use EVERYTHING in the game.

FFXII is a great game. The story may seem lacking because it is not about saving the world. The lack of character development does detract from the game, but not a great deal so. The battle system can be robotical if you let it, I find that I can switch up my combat style greatly depending on how I want to play. For example, I can just let my tanks go out and beat up on the enemy with healing on gambits and just roll through a dungeon that way, or I can use summons and magic to get by. It really gives you the option of making it what you want. i wouldn't really agree with someones criticism of the battle system just because they chose to play it a certain way which may have appeared boring.

Another great compliment that I have for FFXII is the music. When I played the game, the music always reminded me of FFIV and Chrono Trigger. I always felt myself getting absorbed into the music which is easy to forget about when playing the game because it fits so well. Overall, I guess it depends on your definition of over rated. To what degree can a game that is 100% worth playing be over rated? For all of the criticisms, who can outright say that they feel like playing this game was a waste of time.
