(and the fastest theorized engines I'm familiar with are nuclear powered rockets thought to be capable of 12% the speed of light)

WiiCubeM1

I don't think we are capable of anything near 12% the speed of light. That would be over 30,000 km per second I think and light travels at over 330,000 km per second I believe? I think the fastest spacecraft we have ever launched would maybe travel at 30,000 km per hour but not per second. Only way I could see nuclear power reaching over 10% - 12% the speed of light is if it had enough nuclear energy to burn for hundreds or mayne thousands of years?

Manned space exploration is overrated, IMO. We won't be able travel significant distances anytime soon, and there's nothing we can learn from the moon or Mars that we wouldn't be able to learn from Earth. The only real benefit of having a base on the moon would be to make observations from outside of Earth's atmosphere, but we already have the ISS and Hubble Telescope for that. fidosim

That is like saying we can't learn anything from flying like a bird that we wouldn't be able to learn from just standing on the ground. Until you build a plane you have no idea what it might actually take to fly. Have you ever seen early contraptions that were designed to fly but never did? Quite amusing but we did learn from those mistakes.

There is a lot more to be gained then just mere observations. Developing one technology to get a specific task done often branches out leading to new and sometimes unthought of technologies.

The biggest reason for going to space is resources. Earth has finite resources and humans are power hungry. The planets in the solar system have the resources to power us for billions of years and fossil fuels will not be around forever.

Thank you! I have sound again. Could never figure out the Altec Lansing instructions. Saving that so I never have this problem again.

I am having problems getting sound working with the Asus Sabertooth X58 onboard sound which is the Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. There are no conflicts in the device manager so am pretty sure everything is installed correctly. I think the problem is simply with the speaker connections to the back of the motherboard.

I am using the Altec Lansing 251 speakers which can be seen here: http://modtown.co.uk/mt/review2.php?id=alteclansing251

It says to hookup the black to black, green to green and yellow to yellow. Says it is industry standard colors but I have never had such colors on any soundcard so have always had problems hooking up these speakers.

There is no sound when playing mp3's at all but when I run the realtek hd audio manager speaker test I can hear sound coming out of the speakers. I know I have the connections plugged in wrong because when subwoofer is highlighted the sound is coming out of a different speaker. Anyone have any idea where the green black and yellow connections should be plugged in and if so if that will solve the no sound problem with mp3's?

Yeah they had only one other set but they sound like you are in a tin can. So you have to buy the ones with a volume switch on them. I have volume on the speakers, volume on the keyboard and volume on the desktop. I don't need another volume control on the headphones.

Should they be allowed to sell headphones without duck tape? Seems all you can buy is headphones with a volume switch on them. I know it is a conspiracy because I have bought 4 sets of headphones in the past 2 years because the volume switch keeps getting caught on the desk. It wrecks the headphones and causes the sound to cut in and out because the cord gets pulled too hard when it gets caught. These new headphones will last longer then the great pyramids in Egypt now. I used half a roll of duck tape on them and can now use them as a grappling hook and swing from them like Batman!

My guess is it will be a yawn fest. If it was interesting we would have heard about it already or someone would have leaked it.

I am pretty sure governments have not had contact with alien life. If alien life were to visit this planet I believe they would make themselves known to all of mankind not to just a particular government or individual. If they can travel here they are at least as intelligent as us but more advanced technologically and as long as they have emotions they would have similar morale values. So if they came in peace to make contact so that both species could benefit from that contact then they would make their presence well known I think. On the other hand if they didn't come in peace and were not the friendliest species and just as flawed as man there intentions would probably only be for their gain and we would be well aware of their existence. Considering their are billions of galaxies in our visible universe with billions of planets in each I think there must be other life out there and there seems to be lots of evidence that suggests we have been visited. I wouldn't call it proof but there is a lot of convincing evidence that it is possible and may have happened. I just hope they are friendly if they do show up and have ray guns because I always wanted one.
