It's a gimmick, really. You're watching artificial frames that were never meant to be there, which gives the "fluid" looking picture. I'd call it anything but "fluid," because honestly I think it looks like crap also.
So much work for such a small outcome - I would just buy a WRT54G and have been good. It's up to you, really. If you really think you need all the bullcrap stated earlier + gigabit speeds, then more power to you.

It's not always the modem, though I agree that is a good place to start. Most ISPs will let you swap out your old one for a new one free of charge (in the US anyways, not sure in other countries). What is the brand and model number of your modem? Checking the signal of the modem is a good start.
