You'd think of Sony's PS3 as being good for gaming. But not many would associate it with cracking passwords.

Yet that's what security researcher Nick Breese. He's used a PS3 to radically speed up password cracking, using the game console to crack eight-character passwords believed to be "strong" in just hours, rather than the days it would have taken on a computer, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.
The secret is in the Cell processor that runs the PS3, which goes through 1.4 billion cycles per second, as opposed to an Intel chip which runs at 10-15 million cycles per second, Breese explained at the Kiwicon Security Conference last month. The Cell chip contains several processing cores, each one of which can be carrying out actions.

You shouldn't. See there is a subtle distinction.

With a PS3, you have no choice but to take Blu-ray, it is in all SKUs.

With a 360, you have a choice to take HD DVD, it is in only one SKU.

If you think Lemmings were criticising the PS3 for including Blu-ray, your wrong. They were criticising it for making it mandatory.

So that's the new argument they're using -- priceless.

I always thought it was:

"Putting Blu-Ray was the stupidest mistake ever! No one even has HD-TVs yet and no one needs a blu-ray player yet. None of the games have benifited from it yet either!"

Um blue ray was a stupid decision. Its the reason for the massive launch price and the reason why the PS3 will be the biggest flop ever in terms of generation to generation sales difference. They will be lucky if they sell 40 million which is an 80 million drop off. If MS releases a seperate SKU with HDDVD then thats great for the people who can afford it or want it. For the rest of us you can expect a 200$ premium next fall.

Hmm..isnt ps3 at the $400? maybe price boom huh? And when you buy a xbox 360 with no hd dvd player for $50 less? are you that cheap you cant put out $50 more

Yeah lol I have a 8K+ car with a missing side mirror and i care more about getting the scatches out of my ps3 than getting that fixed..kinda sad heh but i supose a lot cheaper to get the ps3 fixed than the car
