Merry Christmas

Another great Christmas once again. This year the highlight is something completely new to me, and I spent a few hours this morning experimenting. After noticing how good I got at Guitar Hero, "Santa" was nice enough to get me a real guitar. I got an epiphone copy of an SG (it looks just like this) and so far i've just been messing with it. But the second I picked it up, it's radically different from Guitar Hero. I'm probably going to post a blog about it once I find a song to play (any beginner suggestions would be appreciated). On the games side of things, I got Assassin's creed and Super Mario Galaxy, but have been otherwise too occupied to play them.

The nightmare before christmas

(that is my final exams) have finally ended!!! I think I did pretty good, except for Latin. Now is the long break and, quite frankly, I really have nothing to do. Sure I'll be relaxing and i'm grateful that's school's over, but I have absolutely no games to play. I finally beat Guitar Hero 3 on expert last night,I almost broke my controller out of frustration trying to beat Lou. I was beginning to thing only Ralph Maccio could beat the Devil.....

In addition, I beatThrough the Fire and the Flames. If you can beat Guitar Hero 3 on Expert, and can somehow get past the intro using a rubber band or whatever else you can find, you will get through the song. After the intro it gets a little crazy during the solos, but there's plenty of star power to be had.My score absolutely sucked and I am at the very bottom of the leaderboards for the song, but I beat it and that's all that matters. I alsobeat Halo 3 on heroic today as well, which was much easier than I expected it to be.

I only have a few hours left of Paper Mario and I have to say it's become one of my most favorite games. I'm putting up my Guitar Hero 3 review tomorrow, since I no longer have an excuse not to do so, and will be making a Paper Mario review as well.

So I'm really not doing much. Since I don't have that many Gamespot people on my xbox live friends list, go ahead and add me if you wanna play sometime.

Paper happiness

I really am grateful for gamefly sometimes. The other day, Paper Mario: The tousand year door came in and that is one hell of a little game. I love the $tyle of the game, the writing is funny, and the battles work really well. It's a fantastic game for the late gamecube and if you haven't already picked up this game and are a few years late like I was, The game costs about $10. Now I want the wii version, and the N64/VC version as well.

In other news, I am very quickly losing my patience with Guitar Hero. It's very frustrating that i'm so close to beating the game, but I just cannot survive past the moshes is Raining blood for the life of me. I also tried to play Guitar Hero 2 the other day, and it really shows how much of an improvement Guitar Hero 3 is. It is almost impossible for me to play difficult songs without those helpful bright notes that i've become so used to, and the graphics themselves look like garbage in comparison. I'm almost done with my review of Guitar Hero 3, and may put it up either today or sometime this week.

I also started playing Halo 3 again, this time trying to go through the campaign by myself on heroic, and with my friend on co-op in legendary. I couldn't even survive the first chapter in legendary by myself, but the addition of another human player makes the game much easier. Heroic is okay, it feels like the best difficulty up until the end when the flood come.

Finals are coming up in 2 weeks, and I won't be on much next week, but after that my activity will be nonexistant. So i'm sorry in advance if i'm late on reading/commenting on everyone's blog but there is so much time in the winter break that i'm going to catch up.

I'm not leaving

This whole thing is sickening, but not enough so that i'm just going to pack my bags and leave. This corruption is a horrible thing, and maybe Cnet will realize just how much the site is goingto godown the drain with many people's credibility ruined. I for one, am not really sure whether or not I can trust the reviews here anymore. My activity here has tanked anyway, and maybe the sudden surge of nomadic gamespotters will allow me to build this profileup more and get noticed more by the community.Several of my friends have already left or deleted their accounts but i'm going to stay here and see how things pan out.I'm not going to leave, but at the most I might cancel my total access subscription and become a free member once again.

Also feel free to use my new avatar, I got it from Jeff's myspace.

Raining Blood...

@#$% YOU!!!!!!!

Raining blood is what my fingers are going to do if I keep trying to beat this song. I understand that people like a challenge, but c'mon Slayer? That's just a little too hardcore for a plastic guitar.

Last damn song

Guitar Hero 3 impressions

I understand that this blog is a little late, but I wanted to experience everything about the game. Overall, it's a verygood game anddefinitely worth the purchase. The core formula remains essentially the same but with only a few tweaks.

First of all, this game easily has one of the greatest songlists on any guitar hero game, ever.Almost every song is a blast to play, and although there are a few blemishes here and there, the overall list is superb. In addition to the songs being better, most of them areharder. Easy and medium difficulties were slightly harder than the songs in Guitar Hero II, but once I reached theend of the hard andexpert careers, things changed. Many of thefinal songs on hard were harder than most songs in Guitar Hero II ever were andexpert mode is absolutely ridiculous once you reach the 6-7th tiers. There's still not enough money in the game to allow you to buy everything in the store, whichis still annoying.

Sadly, battle mode is not all it could have been. While facing off against real guitar heros and using powerups sounds like a great idea, it really does notwell simply because too much of it is basedon chance. Battle mode essentially boils down to getting lefty flip or an amp overload, and using it on your opponent while they are doing a solo. It'stoo difficult to hit notes during these powerups, andit really makes the entire mode unfair. Beatingan opponent at a guitar battle should bethrough superior guitar skills, not unbalanced powerups. The bosses in career modehit 100% of the notes unless you use a powerup, and they getmany more of them than you do.The only positive thing from battle mode is that the guitarists recorded original tracks for the battles, and I play them just to hear the song.

Online play can be fun, but it depends on which modes you play. Battle mode isn't much different from career, and battles are over in less than a minute most of the time. Face off mode is bad because all people play on easy. I understand not all people can play expert mode, but when you play easy just to win, it really runis the game. Face off mode is won based on which player gets the longest note streak.I usually play expert (or maybe hard for some of the more difficult songs) and can 5 star most songs, but I do make mistakes and never have very long note streaks. People playing on easy can get 100% on the song, but the people that challenge themselves lose to someone who is lazy and probably going for the online achievements. Pro face off mode however, is much better. There is a set dufficulty for both players, and you play the entire song instead of little parts in face off mode. This mode feels the most balanced and is pretty fun.

The biggest change though, is the presentation. The game has gotten an enormous facelift over the PS2 graphics on Guitar Hero II, and it looks fabulous. The cartoony menus are still there, as is the band humor in loading screens. The career mode has short cartoony cutscenes about your band which are pretty shallow, but they are also funny and show your rise to stardom. All the venues look good and there are a variety of places to play. Many of the same characters are still around, but they look a little bit different. Loading times are lightning fast, andthe only problem with the graphics are a few framerate issues every once in a while in which the game slows down and then speeds up again.

In conclusion, Guitar Hero is still rockin and kicking ass. Not all of the additions are great, it's a lot harder this time around, but it's still guitar hero through and through, and still a hell of a lot offun.

And Through the fire and flames is impossible (Draqq is a god!!!!). I have no hope of completing the song and can only do about this good in practice mode. That song is Jordan on crack and steroids at the same time!!!!

Rocked...

Like a hurricane! I've just finished with the guitar hero 3 demo and I have to say, it looks promising. The graphics are much better than those previously seen in guitar hero 2, and the few songs I was able to play were better than most of the songs on guitar hero 2 (my favorite of which being the metal by tenacious D). Other than that, the game is really the same. Judy Nails and Johnny Napalm look a little better, as do the crowds who look more like real people rather thanclones. I am participating in the guitar hero weekend thing,to possibly win a few prizes, and get the achievement for beating a guitar hero creator at their own game.i've become so obsessed with this game that my dad is actually trying to get me to play real guitar. I'm sure it will be much harder, but i'm still up for it.

So basically, i'm just wrapped up in the hype for this game, i'm hoping I can get it on release day or the day after or so. Hopefully my mom can ignore my rather short wish list for christmas this year and let me get this one when it's released.

A hollow victory

Earlier today, I was continuing my quest to complete the majority of the Guitar Hero II achievements before the third (or fourth if you count the 80s edition) installment is released later this month. I was in practice mode and the stat screen never came up. I quit practice and went into quick play to attempt the diabolical solos once again.. except the fret board from practice mode was still there. WTF? I played about 80 notes or so of the beginning and that was it, I got about 95% on the song and never did anything. My glitch was very similar to this but I never unplugged my controller.

So I now have the achievement that I so desired for months now, but I never really unlocked it

Now this is just making me want to beat the song even more

~James

Finishing the fight

Of course I got Halo 3! I waited in line for about 30 minutes at my local best buy and it was okay, but i'm definitely not very fond of camping for a game. The only part I liked was that a local 80s radio station had GH 80'sedition set up and I 5 starred several songs on expert the very first time through. It really was funny how people were observing my fingers andacting like I was a GH god, but I don't think i'm that good (Jordan still eludes me!!).I probably should have reviewed the plot from the first two games to get up to speed, because I don't remember much at all:P.

I am definitely up for some4 player co-op with you guys, but not this weekend. First, I am going to homecoming and that's more important than video games, and second, my xbox live membership expired a day before the release of Halo 3 so I need to renew that. I'm also very rusty at this game and need to get good at it again if we're all going to tackle legendary together.

Other than that, Halo is going to dominnate my gaming life until Guitar Hero 3 comes out. If you want to beat the game with me next weekend, just post a comment

The cravings have returned

Now that I have my old computer back and theloaner computer is history, i've gotten addicted to one ofthe most timeless games i've ever played: Pharaoh. I used to be really into this game but after a while I lost interest. But every once in a while I pop the disc back in for old times sake and just get hooked. It's just addicting and it always takes me a few months to lose interest again. It's funny how I should be playing Bioshock or Guitar Hero, or Forza but I keep coming back toEgypt.

Speaking of Bioshock, I have about another hour or so tops left in the game and i'm pretty satisfied. I got some decent achievements the first time through, but didn't bother with audio diaries much, and could never find all of the power to the people stations. I'm also not sure what to do about the last little sister since I apparantely need one to open the door that Fontaine ran throughso i'm afraid to save it from being a little sister. I've saved all of them (except for the final one obviously)so I'm hoping to get that achievement out of the way.

As for other games, I've rented Forza in time for the gamespot tournament in October (I know I don't actually own the game yet, and am basically renting a game for an emblem. I don't care, I just want to be in another gamespot tournament.) and so far, I think it's a decent game, but i'm not really as blown away as the entirety of Gamespot seemed to be. But, I haven't played it much so maybe i'll be awed later on in the experience. I'm giving up on some of the guitar hero achievements such as 500,000 points on a song, or 5 starring everything on expert simply because that's never going to happen. I don't have the time or patience to become that good just for a few extra gamerscore. I am however going to try and complete expert mode (literally only 2 more songs to complete), finish Jordan on expert, and 5 star hard mode. After that I'm done with Guitar Hero II.

And that's pretty much all that has happened gaming wise. I know i'm not as here very much anymore, and i'm sorry if i'm not commenting in your blog. I have lots of work to do now that school has started and any time besides school/social life is spent playing games. I haven't completely abandoned Gamespot, so don't fret.

See you around Gamespot,

~James
