[QUOTE="JabbaDaHutt30"]Didn't anyone think it was a tad bad to enslave other people? It wasn't that long ago either.Samurai_Xavier

Maybe when you get to 6th grade youll find out why. :|

Depends on where I study, I guess. I may never know the truth.

[QUOTE="alphamale1989"]People viewed africans as inferior beings. And if you were raised that way- if all your friends and faimily thought the same- what would make you think differently?

First-hand experience of observing slavery? People changed eventually.

Cheap labor.

But what was the moral excuse for doing something like that? Yeah, they regarded them as not being homo sapiens but I don't see how (alleged) inferiority would excuse slavery.

There was no need to justify it; slavery was not considered a bad thing. This is just how society changes. You can ask these questions now, but they never even considered the idea that it was a moral wrong. Until they started to, of course.

I don't agree. Slavers tried to rationalize it by considering Africans somewhere between the "modern human" and... chimps, was it? They did it more later on when it began to be questioned, yes, but the reasoning was still the same as before.

Cheap labor is cheap labor.

If you have a people that you can simply capture to do work for you, may as well take advantage of it.

It sounds like a dirty business. Going overseas to capture black people and then going back to your wife and kids to be a loving father.

Africans enslaved Africans before Americans did

vitriolboy
And? Wasn't America a bit more culturally advanced than the Africans?

[QUOTE="dnuggs40"][QUOTE="JabbaDaHutt30"][QUOTE="dnuggs40"] Makes perfect sense. Murder, assault, and theft are all crimes punishable by imprisonment.

Not all kinds of the same crimes are punishable to the same degree, and there are some cases of theft which for one shouldn't be able to take legal action against.

They already are not lol. The murder will probably get life in jail or maybe put to death. The guy who assaulted his wife will probably get 5 years and probation. And the kid who stole an apple and refused to give back even when a police officer gave him an order to do so...couple days in jail. Everything looks pretty kosher to me.

No, I meant to say that the punishment can differ even if the same crime (like for example murder) has been committed.

[QUOTE="JabbaDaHutt30"][QUOTE="dnuggs40"] It's not a stupid reason...a POLICE OFFICER gave him an order to give it back, and he refused. The result is of course jail. Anyways, based on some of the responses in this thread, I am guessing jail/prison is in some of you people's future lol. I am sure you will be sitting in the stockade wondering why you are there, too. "hey man! I didn't do anythin wrong! You gotta believe me!"dnuggs40

Convict nr. 1: So what are you in here fo, fellas? Convict nr. 2: I murdered a couple. Convict nr. 3 I set my wife's hair on fire because the divorce was bleeding me dry. 18 year old kid: I stole an apple.

Makes perfect sense. Murder, assault, and theft are all crimes punishable by imprisonment. Whats even worse is the officer even gave him a chance...yet the stupid kid still refused. Stupidity of this magnitude should be a crime.

The fact that he "gave him a chance" is stupid in itself. Do you give the burglar a chance to put the TV down and be on his way? It's either a crime or it's not.
