I think Eurogamer asked this a while back. Who is the PS5 Pro actually for? The PS4 Pro was aimed at the 4K TV owners as there was a huge jump from HD to 4K TV owners halfway through the PS4 reign therefore the Pro (for all its £350) was justifiable. However, not many of us have 8K telly’s and current Performance modes are so refined it’s sometimes difficult to tell them apart from Fidelity or Resolution modes. The only real contender here is Ray Tracing and the jury’s still out on the future of that one IMO as most devs dont commit to it and put in lazy ray tracing techniques (like ray traced shadows - yawn) just to tick a box. The results are usually shit. Therefore, what this really means is devs will just have to spend more time optimising the game for another console and another upscaling technique to add to DSS and FSR - hotfixing weekly to remove more and more visual artefacts for a console no one owns bar “console enthusiasts”.
Slight side rant but what the **** is a console enthusiast, anyway? PC enthusiasts or frame chasers I understand - you have unlimited freedom (and resources) to tune, upgrade and tweak to your hearts content to improve visual quality and FPS (or both). PC’s are modular so upgrade what you can and post those vids. It’s an arena of Overclocking and CAS timings. But with a console you’re still limited to the hardware, the dev and the locked down OS. I don’t get calling it an enthusiasts console.
On the plus side, maybe this will introduce more path tracing support for games but TBH you’re going to need a hell of a lot more Teraflops there, Sony. Or maybe it’s just their way of saying you’ll need this to play GTA6 in the same visual fidelity as what’s been advertised.
Unlike when the PS4 Pro was announced, I’m not feeling the new console urge or FOMO here. Therefore, in the words of Austin Powers when demonstrating his shit black jack skills - I’ll stay.
