Haha, its the only way they communicate, its just like when teens used AIM and other IM things 24/7. If you don't remember, when you're in highschool you have much more "friends" then when you are in the real world as you're forced into spending hours with dozens of people. This means they have more people to text and texting is their main form of communication. Not much of a surprise when you think about it. If you're having a solid convo with someone through texting you can send 50+ an hour. So imagine having conversations with 4 or 5 people sending 50 texts an hour to each one.
