I would second marcthpro's advice but go for E8500 as this will easily OC to 4.3GHz. Also go for a aftermarket cooler the stock one is no good for OC. Depending on your budget; AC Freezer 7 Pro or Titan Fenrir. WRT Memory, have you specified 4x1GB or 2x2GB, I would recommend 2x2GB (DDR2 PC-8500 minimum) as this will be more OC friendly.

With the launch of 40nm GPUs; 1Gb 4870 prices are falling, you might want to shop around and find that a 4870 is not much more than a 9800GTX+ but will give you more performance. If you are in the UK then Aria, Scan, Novatech and Overclock are changing there ATI GPU prices quite frequently.

I agree aeterna789, with your budget I recommend a 4770. If your mobo and wallet allows, you can always crossifre later as the 4770 scales quites well on crossfire

Might what to have a look at the ATI 4770 for the same price. It is based on 40nm technology so runs cooler and thus overclocks well, see links below: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/sparkle_calibre_p980x/ http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/17320-ati-radeon-hd-4770-512mb-gddr5-review.html

With your budget I think you can get a good PC. I not sure what the predominant use is but if it is for games then I would recommend:

CPU - E8400 processor as you planto overclock and the cooler you're looking at will getyou at least 4GHz.

Mobo - Biostar T Power I45 is very stable overclocker.

RAM -If you can afford an extra £13 you can get CAS 4 (Corsair XMS).

HDD - dn't mention a hard-drive, if you need one then a Samsung F1 HD103UJ(1TB) is ~£68.

GPU - I would agree with markop2003 and get the best single card solution you can afford, with your budget this is likely to be a 1GB HD 4870 (£134).

Only other advice is to shop around especially with GPU, RAM and CPU; have a look at the 'Today Only' offers at Scan which change daily but there is £7 total carriage.

Good luck with your build.

I would recommend a few more reviews of CF 4890 against the GTX 295 I think the majority vote is for the GTX 295. Even your original post quotes 'GTX 260 in SLI (which is normally comparable to the 4870) was equal in FPS to the 4890 in crossfire' and a GTX 295 is essentially GTX 275 in SLi. Don't get me wrong I am a ATI fan (I have a 4870X2) but with your budget I would go for the GTX 295, unfortunately I couldn't afford it.

Both Duo core and Quad Core play all games. ATM developers do not fully utilise quad cores and thus clock speed is the key. For modest budgets Duo cores overclock better and if gaming is the main function then I would suggest a E8400 which can overclock to 4.3Ghz with air cooling. But make you get a good motherboard that is stable with high FSB. Another reason why clock speed is important is because it has an impact on high performance graphics cards and the graphics card is the biggest contributor to gaming performance. Naturally for futureproofing (i.e. when developers do exploit the full potential of a quad core) then i7 920 is a better choice but this is costly due to the LGA1366 mobo and triple channel DDR3 memory. ATM (for gaming) you are better getting a E8400 and investing the difference in a high end graphics card e.g. 4870X2 or GTX 295.

As you can afford two 4890's, aren't you better off with two GTX 275 or a GTX 295. Does your mobo support both SLi and Crossfire. If so you probabally have an i7 in which case i would go for a GTX 295 to do it justice.

I think the difference is minimal and maybe your choice should be influcened by your mobo, is it SLi or Crossfire ready. P.S. XFX 4870X2 prices are in free-fall due to the impending 4890X2 or 5800 series so if you can stretch your budget then maybe a 4870X2 is the way to go.
