No, the reason for the Civil War was the rights of states to govern themselves independently. This (And slavery) were both majority held views (the North had slaves too).TheokhothWrong. The vast majority of population was against slavery at that point. United States Slavery and the 1860 Census Of the 27 million whites counted in the 1860 census, 8 million lived in the slave owning states of the South. Of these, 385,000 owned slaves. No they didn't; hence why the Civil War happened. Majority rule has been overthrown many times.TheokhothUm you do realize that the civil war wasn't fought over slavery right? Was it a factor? yes. And the majority of population was in the north.
That's what the U.S. has been doing for a while now Civil Rights Ending Slavery Women Suffrage WWII There where a lot of situations where the government went against the will of the people for the better good.the_new_guy_92Actually no. The majority of people approved of each of those things by the time they were adopted.
Will of the people trumps the constitution?the_new_guy_92I didn't say that. I said they have the right to do it. That being said. SOmetimes you have to not worry about your right to do something instead whether you should do something. They could build a much better sense of trust and commuinity by moving the mosque to a less controversial location then they can by building the "community center" in a place that the vast majority of people are opposed to it being. Like I said, they have the right but maybe not doing it is the better option.
If the will of the people tramples on basic human rights, then the people are wrong and it's the government's JOB to go against the will of the people.TheokhothNo, just no. Do you know how easy that could be used to turn a democracy to a dictatorship?
