That kind of contradicts the fact that they were LOSING money on each console sold thus far...sony is not going to drop the price because they love selling their product over price.

If manufacturing costs were the only costs associated with a product then that may be the case. But at $300 a console they'll probably still be losing money per console. They're losing money on the PS3 right now then their manufacturing cost is supposed to be much less than price. It seems a bit like Sony PR spin this one. If you assume they make money on the PS2, games and the PSP the black hole that is the games division's accounts has to be losing money somewhere.[QUOTE="themyth01"][QUOTE="chapnzaba"]Awesome. Even if they lower it to $300, they'll still make $60 a unit.blue_hazy_basic
EDIT even if you say it costs $250 to make, you also have to add in packaging, shipping, retailers cut, etc. Sonywon't be making anything on units.Without knowing more its impossible to say, anyways any cost reduction is good news for Sony.
Sony PR? The article quoted Sony's CEO himself! The confirmation of the 70% price reduction in manufacturing came from Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's CEO and Executive Vice President, during a Q109 finacials investment call. During that call he stated:
"The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule. We don't disclose how much of the PS3, specifically the cost deduction was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule ... About 70%, roughly speaking".

PS3 Slim anyone? :)
True, none of the above was announced but that doesn't mean I cant speculate :) All the signs are there. 70% cost reduction means they can easily cut the price by 100$ and still make some profit out of it. Hell, they can slash the price in half and only lose around 20$ per console. As for BC, why on earth would they file a patent if not to use it? I believe Sony has plenty to counter the upcoming Halo. I'm not sure even KZ2 had this much hype as Uncharted 2. And what about GT 5?err neither of those things were either announced.
WHile I do agree that sonys lineup is the most impressive this year I feel that microsoft wil end up on top as so far (I know it can still be turned around) they are the only company that has not gone into the red last quarter.
Plus they have there huge hardware updates in the fall, and the next Halo (ODST) coming out which quite frankly as far as popularity goes will pretty much kill off any other game in the market. Its a shame but truthfully the only game that can possibly stand a chance to succeed alongside it is New Super Mario Bros Wii as Mario is just as well known of a name as Halo.

I'm mostly a hermit myself but I've been keeping a close eye on them consoles for the past 3 years.
And it seems like the time to pickup one is more near than ever.
IMO, Sony's gonna end up on top. Well, at least for what's left of the current year.
This is why:
- Price drop
In nowadays economical state, 400$ for just about anything isn't a true bargain. Not to mention when competition has got something similar to offer for half the price. I guess that's what the world has been chanting and screaming at Sony for the past year. Internet is swamped with supposed footage and alleged acknowledgements for the upcoming Slim Model by IGN staff. It is also well known that the research for a 45NM CELL chip has been completed a long time ago. The production costs of PS3 have plunged by 70%(!!!). If that is indeed true, PS3 is by now a profitable console. Also Latest rumors claim the very much anticipated reveal will take place at this August's GamesCom in Germany where Sony is planning a 3 hour show. Seems like the perfect time to me.
- Backwards Compatibility
Sony has recently filed a patent at the US Patent Office for Software Emulation for the PS2 Emotion Engine using CELL technology. It might not be that naive to think that this is what awaits PS3 users on the next 3.0 firmware upgrade. Also the all-time greatest lineup of games (console-wise) belongs to the PS2. Having that FINALLY arriving at the PS3, Sony will have absolutely no match in terms of games library.
I'm not sure whether anyone could have asked for more.
What do you guys think?

That issue is well known and is taken care of by DICE. It's allover their forums.I think a big problem with the PS3 version that may put the 360 version ahead by a bit in my book. (I only own the PS3 version) Is that the PS3 has a horrendous mic issue. You get into a party with friends and the mics work for about 10 minutes and then they go all crazy. I mean thats a pretty important factor.
