Concerning the Hurricane

First, let me say I hope any GS members affected by this storm are safe and out of harm's way.

With that said I must confess that the Media hype surrounding this storm is a bit obnoxious. This is sensationalism at its worst.

Speaking as a native Floridian that has lived through a fair share of storms like this and/or greater magnitude, the amount of dramatizing and scare mongering being perpetrated by the Media is absolutely deplorable.

A Category 1 hurricane is nothing to make light of and that is not my intention with this blog. My intention is to point out the absurdity of the Media and how they are reacting to this particular storm. FOX News in particular seems to have latched on to the drama train and is going full steam ahead with non-stop, 24/7 coverage of this "super storm" which has been callouslessly dubbed "Frakenstorm."

The devastation displayed is nothing extravagant or overly destructive than what I have seen happen after similar storms here in Florida. Indeed, they should be happy that Sandy was only a Cat 1 strength because I can only imagine how more intense their drama would escalate had this storm been stronger.

My point is, please don't allow yourself to be suckered into the Media hype surrounding this storm. Stay safe, remain calm and keep a cool head. This is not the end of the world.

7 XCOM Tips from a N00b!

xcom_banner-540x390.jpg

  1. Don't Forget to Reload, Stupid! - This one may seem blatantly obvious, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to forget. Nothing's more disappointing than targeting an alien only to look down and see your weapon icon flashing red! So don't forget, when you have some downtime in between firefights, RELOAD!
  2. Build that OTS ASAP! - Seriously, the more "swingin' ****s" you can field, the better your odds of surviving. Build an OTS as soon as you can and also make sure you have the funds to buy the squad I & II perks. There are other helpful bonuses as well, but those are the first two I like to get right off the bat.
  3. Patience is a Virtue - Yep, I know it's tempting to use "Dash" everywhere to oust those alien bastards, but that's a quick ticket aboard the death train. To succeed in this game you must advance at a snail's pace; preferably with one designated pointman and three (or more) soldiers covering with "Overwatch." Why so many soldiers dedicated to "Overwatch?" Because they're more than likely to miss, so the more you have set the likelier you are to actually nail a hit. I like to advance my pointman to his safe limit (the blue outline) so if he does find himself in over his head he still has movement to beat a hasty retreat.
  4. Don't be Afraid to Blow Some !@$# Up! - Grenades and rocket launchers are your friends. Don't be afraid to use them.
  5. Practice Makes Perfect (or so they say) - You're gonna lose--a lot. Just get used to it. There's no shame in saving and reloading if one of your high ranking dudes bites it. I'm new to this game; this game is harsh. It will take your soldiers and spit them out without even blinking an eye. So the best way to learn how to play is to keep playing and replaying those saves where you died and learn from the "why's" from those situations (too exposed, no one covering, outflanked, etc.)
  6. Don't Depend on Cover! - Cover is nice and all, but it's not a guarantee. Even when you're in full cover you can still get shot and killed (WTF?).
  7. Sell, Sell, Sell! - You can definitely tell this XCOM project is government run since you only get paid once a month and the pay is lousy. Be that as it may, don't forget about the Grey Market if you find yourself short on cash.

Obviously this is not meant for XCOM veterans. A lot (if not all) is common knowledge to those people. But for people like me who never played this game and aren't used to the brutality, those people may gain some knowledge. I already know there are other, more detailed lists out there from game sites giving better advice and covering a lot more bases. But I just needed an excuse to blog and kind of share my experience with this game in an indirect way.

EDIT: I added two more that I thought of last night.

The Wii U is Awesome...if This Was Still 2006.

No doubt I'll incur some wrath regarding this blog's title. To those who I have no doubt infuriated I respectfully admonish you to sit back and relax. It's not a condemnation of the system as much as it is an overt way of me saying Nintendo is late to the party.

I just finished watching the Wii U presentation. Unfortunately I woke up late the morning it was streamed live so I had to wait until I could catch up with the archived version.

What I saw--and the impressions I gathered from the full fifty-six minute presentation--was a company offering an enhanced console seemingly marketed directly at those individuals that never bought a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 this generation, and who may have been holding out for the rumored "Wii HD." Well, those folks can now rejoice because their patience has essentially (and finally) been rewarded with the Wii U.

Unfortunately, for the vast majority of gamers that bought a 360 or PS3, the Wii U doesn't seem to offer much in way of features that those gamers can't already access now through their respective consoles. So this got me thinking: Who, then, is the intended audience for the Wii U? And the answer almost smacked me in the face: Current Wii owners.

Even down to the third-party support which, in Nintendo's defense is a lot better this time, is late offering big titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Mass Effect 3, Darksiders II and Assassin's Creed III--big name games for sure but all are available on the 360 or PS3 way in advance. The latter which releases October 30th but which will still have been available to other gamers for a staggering thirty-four days before future Wii U owners can buy their copy. And unless current 360 and PS3 gamers love the thought of dishing out another $60 for a game they already own and more than likely finished months ago, who does that leave? You see my point.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dissuade anyone or bash on Nintendo with this blog. If the Wii U tickles your fancy, then more power to you! My point is timing is everything. And in an industry where everyone lives by deadlines and release schedules, releasing a "next gen" console that will essentially become obsolete whenever the next Xbox and PlayStation launch just seems like two steps forward and one step back.

Personal La-Dee-Dee Blog

Just sort of updating the past events of my life, and practicing my blogging skills since I don't blog as much as I used to.

I just recently came back from a trip out to Colorado. The trip mainly served as a way to bring more of my things back to where I live now as well as weed through my crap out there and sell as much as I could.

Between all that we took a mini-vacation to the Southwest hitting such nature-inspired wilderness as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and a smaller park called Arches. This was my first time visiting those places and it was truly beautiful.

After that little excursion it was time to get back to business by renting a truck and packing it with the things I wanted to take back with me which included a kick-ass grill that my mom actually won in some contest out there, my motorcycle and a 50" plasma HDTV.

The trip back was, in a word, stressful. Not only was the truck packed down to the bursting limit and I was constantly worried about the TV (even though we buffeted it as much as we could), but we also had to transport two cats as well. We had a few minor problems with the truck we rented and the added stress of finding hotels where we could sneak the cats in without having to walk through a main lobby was getting to me. All told it took us about three days to get back whereas it took less than 36 hours going out. But the circumstances were different coming back than going out. I'm happy to report the TV survived and works beautifully in my new location.

I'm back now and have been for a good two weeks. I've been mainly resting and recuperating. I haven't played anything because I'm either too tired, occupied with something else or I'm just not in the mood. I'm going to try and get around to some Red Dead Redemption this weekend since after my trip to the real-world Southwest and seeing that environment, I've been inspired to play through RDR again.

I've taken up posting in the different forums around here at GS ever since I learned that they no longer moderate you for censor bypassing. I started noticing people dropping F bombs in news articles and people generally swearing and apparently getting away it. Which surprised me because you couldn't sneeze around here without fear of getting moderated. But for whatever reason they no longer do that around here, which is a relief. Not that I'm going around dropping F bombs, but it's nice to be treated like an adult without worrying you'll modded for saying the word "ass."

Watchdogs Promises a Lot; Hopefully it Delivers

Another E3 has come and gone and debates of who won or lost are being fervently argued back and forth right now in a local forum near you. I don't know about some people, but one of the main reasons I love E3 is learning about new IPs and this year was not a disappointment.

One particular IP has generated a lot of buzz from multiple gaming sites with some even declaring it as the game that stole the show. I am of course talking about Watchdogs by Ubisoft Montreal. The live demo really impressed the audience, and pretty soon it was uploaded to various gaming outlets to an even larger audience where Internet denizens consumed every frame and polygon. I won't waste time describing the demo as I'm sure you've already seen it; perhaps multiple times by now.

I, too, became intrigued after watching it. But after letting the hype die down I started to think about something I noticed in the demo: The character's ability to hack almost every electronic device he came in proximity to (particularly cell phones), and how the developers themselves say this ability will prove to be a major mechanic in the game. While the player is not restricted to this method alone, it's evident that this mechanic is being given prominence as an alternate means to complete missions.

There was a niggling thought in the back of my head after seeing all those hack icons pop up over the sea of NPCs scattered about in the demo, and that was I hope this feature doesn't turn out to be more of a gimmick than it is for actual applicability to gameplay. What I mean to say is, I hope Ubisoft isn't bragging about this mechanic as being all-important when its actual application is minimal at best and completely nonessential at worst.

I guess the only comparison I can think of is with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. A large criticism of that game concerned the shooting aspect, and a lot of complaints from gamers said it wasn't as refined as traditional FPS games who felt the shooting -- while still a viable option to complete missions -- was subpar. Gamers who felt this way also said that it was almost as if the game "forced" the player to always take the stealthy route.

So it is my fear with Watchdogs that the ability to hack every NPC's phone that this isn't the developer's way of "forcing" you to play the game, or make the player feel inadequate if they don't perform this action. If Ubisoft is going to great lengths to make this mechanic available for every NPC, then they need to make it worth the player's time in regards to it having some meaningful impact while playing the game.

Why do I want to hack a random NPC's phone? What beneficial purpose does it provide to my character, the story or the specific mission I am on? Do hacking random NPC cell phones impact the game in any substantial way other than "I can do it"? These are the questions I'm asking concerning this mechanic.

I realize the longer this industry continues to thrive and the more mature it becomes, devising new and interesting ways to play games is very difficult. Developers are fighting for gamers' attention like never before as it's not enough to make a game fun, but you have to make a game with staying power. With so many developers vying for a piece of the pie and a bevy of options available to the consumer, your game really has to stand out to succeed.

Back to my point: I really hope what we saw in the demo was more than just icing on an already tempting cake. The demo was certainly satisfactory and didn't leave much room for doubt that Watchdogs will deliver an interesting experience with compelling gameplay. Hopefully the ability to hack random NPC cell phones won't be as irrelevant as it sounds.

501 Blogs & Counting

So a lot has happened since my return blog. Thanks to all who replied.

I'll get this out of the way. I wrote two more reviews (I know, it's crazy, right?). Uncharted 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Once again, thumbs up are appreciated as are general comments and/or critiques with anything you agree or disagree with.

Next up, one of my molars chipped tonight while I was eating a chewey multi-vitamin. Can you believe it? Of all the crap junk food I eat to have it chip on a soft-chew, multi-vitamin. So guess what that means? Tomorrow I get to visit the dentist for a semi-emergency visit. Yay. I guess the silver lining in all of this is I'm not in any pain, but I'm dreading the 'morrow.

I received Kingdoms of Amalur from Gamefly yesterday and started playing through that. It's actually very good. A bit simplistic; even on "Hard" it's a breeze (so far at least), but don't let that turn you off. What surprised me the most is how much crap the NPCs have to say! Wow. Every major NPC has an opinion on every subject you have discovered so far.

I'm playing as a rogue that specializes in assassination with daggers. The combat is extraordinarily fun. The world is beautiful and very detailed. The music is reminiscent of Fable. And the lore seems to be extensively created. I'm thinking this is a keeper game, and I probably won't be sending this one back.

When I'm not playing games on my PS3, I've been thoroughly enjoying steaming movies and TV shows from the Amazon streaming service. If you have an Amazon Prime membership I recommend checking it out. I've been reliving the early '90s by going through and watchingThe X-Files. Man, I love that show. They have all theLost seasons as well and a bunch of others. Admitedly, the free movie selection isn't that great (Netflix is still king when it comes to that), but you can rent newer movies for cheap. So if you already have a Prime membership and haven't checked it out yet, I recommend it.

And that'll do it for now. E3 is just around the corner. Can you believe we're already halfway through the year? In the words of Bart Simpson, "Aye, carumba!"
