Professor Layton is great, but way too advanced for a 5 and 7 year oldProffesor Layton seems like a good puzzel game it has over a hundred puzzels, and downloadable puzzels as well. I would suggest going to the "top DS games"list and search puzzel games.

The DS is primarily a gaming system... get them a DS if you want them to play some video games, not if you want to teach them something... there are a few titles but I don't know why you wouldn't just read to them or let them learn that sort of thing at school. My kids (7 and 5) both have the leapster educational game system and it has been fantastic. We live in Japan however and every man and his dog has DS-We are yet to find any remotely educational games available for the DS though.
After witnessing the thousands of dopey-zombie DS playing kids here there doesn't seem to be much benefit of getting our kids a DS system, which is a shame-as they can feel left out.
Can anyone recommend anything educational for DS that may change our mind?
Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, innovation is not that important, as someone mentioned previously. The quality of the game play is more important to me. Super Nintendo, the first console I owned and gamed on, is an incredibly simple system, and yet it had some of the most wonderful games, like SMB 3 and the Donkey Kong series.
There is far too much emphasis, in the gaming world and in other areas like the arts, on innovation. In gaming, it seems that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are now focused on beating each other in terms of innovation... just look at the motion control explosion. I own a Wii and I hardly ever play it because I find traditional controls, rather than motion controls, much easier, and much more engaging. In art it is similar... make an outlandish and different artwork so that you can sell yourself as a unique brand.
That is, I predict, what the gaming companies would like. To distinguish themselves from one another and give the impression that they are leading the new technologies and innovations.
As someone who has gamed for many years, I know I prefer the older, simpler gameplay of Ocarina of Time and the 2D Mario platformers. Having said that, I absolutely love my DS, it's my favourite console this generation, over my Wii and PS3. The touch screen can be a lot of fun to use in games. 3D is exciting too. But focus on making quality games over new forms of control, and I'm happy.
sounds like a fake to me too.Talked to three stores in the chain today who saidthat this is a complete fabrication. I'm just sayin'.

I'm just the messenger! Well looking at the header in the DS forum it appears no forum will be made like I was originally told. Here is a snippet: The DS, DSi, 3DS forum is available for you to discuss the games and the handhelds.

It still doesn't answer the question of why though
Yes... I too don't understand this. The 3DS is NOT a hardware refresh or upgrade, like going from a PSP 3000 to a PSP GO, or a DS Lite to a DSi. It is the next generation handheld. It would be like not having a PS3 forum and just deciding to keep everything in the PS2 forum. What's the point? I go to the DS board to discuss and learn about the DS and its games. But pretty much every thread on the first few pages is about the 3DS. GameFAQ's seems to get that the 3DS needs its own forum. Why not here?megageneI agree, the PS2 to PS3 is a good comparison because the systems have similar look but completely different capabilities.
