Perhaps more people would contribute if they know about it. In NSMB2 all you had to do to contribute to the coin total was connecting to the internet. Nothing else. You contributed without even knowing. Now with Global Missions, however, you have to go to a certain NPC hidden in a certain place that is only accessible inside some hidden feature hidden in a lot of other rubbish in your second page of the menu that doesn't even get available until halfway through the game where it just mentions it by-the-way that the festival plaza is is now accessible.
Of course nobody will participate, because you'd have to get sidetracked like hell to even find out about the existence of this feature. And then what you have to do to contribute is island scanning, which most people have little reason to bother with at this point.
I didn't even know about this event. And that's after spending perhaps 30 minutes on festival plaza. If they would have just made it so that every player with an internet connection would automatically contribute, the goal would have most likely been reached. Instead, it's hidden away somewhere in an elaborate extra feature that just distracts from the actual game. Of course there won't be a lot of people contributing.
To everyone saying that this is just April fools, keep in mind that the fiscal year in Japan also starts today. Remember when Kaz Hirai became the CEO and president of Sony April first a couple of years ago?
lol. Most likely, Apple just gave them the means to get into all iPhones anyway, but just pretend to the public that they didn't. All these great, open letters about privacy, trust and "too dangerous" are much better PR than openly admitting to giving the government access to all the data on your phones.
