@spindie Journey won Gamespot's game of the year last year - a game produced by indie developer 'thatgamecompany'. There's your proof right there............
At first, this might seem like a shock - but stop to think about it and it'll make sense.
According to the numbers, making a protagonist male is always a better sales decision (though not necessarily the best artistic decision). Male-oriented games like Gears of War 3 (5.79m copies), Uncharted 3 (5.74m) or Assassins Creed 3 (9.55m) are hard-hitters and bring publishers a lot of money. Compare this with say Bayonetta (0.85m), Mirror's Edge (2.2m) and, at 1.09m copies sold so far - the new Tomb Raider which doesn't look like it's going to buck the trend.
The numbers speak for themselves. Most gamers are male (by a pretty huge majority), so naturally, a male will buy a video game where they'll get to play as a male. It's not a promising future for the games industry if we're to be taken seriously as an art form - but that's where we consumers come in. If you want less sales decisions like this, we as consumers will need to vote with our wallets and actually buy games with female protagonists.
After all, business decisions are made off consumer behaviour...
5. The Half Life series -I consider myself a fan of shooting games and I haven't even played THIS?! whats wrong with me? 4. The Metal Gear Solid series -I must know the whole story. 3. Ocarina of Time -i have played it but i REALLY should FINISH it. 2. The Final Fantasy series -I want to start from the beginning and finally know what you people are on about. 1. World of Warcraft -seeing that this game is a beter alternative to LIFE, i really should give it a look.
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles through Time (SNES) 2. Final Fighter (SNES) 3. Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) (PS2) 4. We Love Katamari (PS2) 5. Buzz: The Music Quiz the common theme here is that these games are generally not purchased by mainstream gamers, (well at least not in Aust.) yet they are still awesome. They make me look like some cool, shady left field gamer, except for Buzz which is cool to have coz people depend on you to bring it to parties.
