The Closing Ceremonies of the January 2006 Superlatives

It's been a long road from the nomination process, to the final voting process, to now, when we unveil the winners of the January 2006 Superlatives. But in keeping with the Olympic theme, I'm going to prolong it just a little bit longer to talk about this amazing event. :) January and February were dark months for TV.com. The site was littered with bugs, Howdy Doody and MP3.com icons were appearing more often, and Level 51 could not be surpassed. It was a time of frustration, a time of anger, and a time when many of the site's biggest contributers and most influential members decided that there were better things they could do with their time. It was a time that needed distractions. And thus, the January 2006 Superlatives were born. I decided that the site needed this to look forward to, and that we'd do one of these every four months. But in order to keep the schedule straight so that every year started with a superlatives, the first one would need to be in January. And so February became January, at least on my blog. ;) It began with a nomination round, a first for the Superlatives, on February 12, in which tens of users submitted their choices for 12 categories. It was difficult work for the vote counter, and he had to learn a great deal about organization and spreadsheets. But the people needed their votes counted. :) And the nominations were announced on February 17, to great fanfare. Then the real battle began. There were numerous problems during the final voting round. First of all, the French were involved in some shifty vote stealing. They contacted the Canadians and promised them that Stig14 would win in Most Popular if Witchinsider won Best Blopper. The Canadians of course, being the good people they are, ratted out the French and the deal was squashed. ;) And then one of the contestants, who has yet to be discovered, had her ex-husband try to hack into Awerlwas' computer so she could no longer blop. Luckily, the ex-husband wasn't very good at hacking. But it just goes to show how cut-throat these competitions can be. Finally, after all the troubles, we get to this moment: the votes have been tallied, the winners have been decided, and the medals have been made. Now, here are your choices for the January 2006 Superlatives! :D Most Popular: This award goes to the person whose colossal blogs and polite blog comments have made her a favorite among all TV.com users. Angelsxo wins most popular in a landslide. Funniest: "Hey, have you heard the one about Ole and Sven going Ice-Fishing?" This award goes to me, Midwestrocker. Most Influential: Let me ask you: who doesn't want to be like Stig14, the winner of this award? She's smart, she's funny, and she's lived in Japan. :D And her blogs have changed the way a lot of us do things. Best Blog: I would provide a link to the best blog, but that would be pointless since you are already there. ;) This award goes to me, Midwestrocker. Best Blopper: She blops to many, many blogs every day with interesting commentary and uplifting messages for those who are down. Thus, the winner of this award is Awerlwas. Best Banner: Not only is it the best banner, it's the best dressed banner! This award goes to Witchinsider. Best Poster: She's always helping out those in need, answering questions and sticking up for those who're frustrated, and keeping every one out in the forums sane. The winner of this award is Angelandspike. Smartest: You don't have to be smart to know, that the smartest one here is clearly Sesho. :) Most Missed: Who else could it be? The man whose blogs are still unparalleled. The man whose influence brought us all together. The man whose links were so well-placed. The man who left us for a real life. This award goes to Danasdude, who we will always remember no matter what. Best Ranter: You feel her anger. The winner is RoxieVelma, who is thoroughly fed up. Best Cult: Although it's going through a rough patch right now, the Cult of the Blue Boxies is still the most dominant cult. The Boxies aren't blue anymore, nor are they as prolific, but they still exist, and they're still cool. :D Most Polite: Finally, we come to the last category. This person's kind words have clearly touched every one on the site. The winner of the final award is... Awerlwas. Congratulations to all the winners! You'll have your gold medals by tomorrow, at the latest. Special congratulations go to RoxieVelma, Witchinsider, and Awerlwas (in no specific order), who've won their first ever superlatives. :) They serve to remind everyone that that didn't win these contests are open, and if you didn't win this time you stand a chance of winning when this happens again in May. And I'd like to note that all but two of the winners, Danasdude and I, are women. What does that tell you? Finally, I want to end by asking you all for a favor. "Superlatives" is a very bad word for this. It's long, it's clumsy, and it's hard to use. I would like a different name for all this, so if anybody can come up with one post it here. Something like "The _______ Awards." ;) That's all. Thanks to everyone who voted, this clearly wouldn't happen without you (well, it might, but I would come off as a jerk :P). Keep doing what you do, and be back here in May (if not before then) to vote for the second Superlatives of 2006.

Hey Everyboody!

When Craig Ferguson says "Hey everybody" in his Scottish accent, it sounds like "Hey Everyboody." And I love that. I've started saying it all the time. It really bugs my real life friends, which is part of the reason I keep doing it, and the reason I'm going to introduce it here. :) So to all of you I say "Hey Everyboody!" I just got back from getting my hair cut, and it didn't go so well. That's what I get for having my haircut at JC Penney's; they don't really have a lot of experience with men's hair. I came out looking like Friar Tuck. But anyway, while I was getting it done a man interrupted the muzak on the overhead radio and said "Attention J.C. Penney shopper: When was the last time you loved your hair? (my hairdresser laughed when he said this) Head down to the J.C. Penney Hair Salon to get your hair fixed up the way you want it, ya varmints (or something to that effect)." I was wondering why my hairdresser laughed at this when she answered that question all on her own: "I always laugh when he says that, because it doesn't make any sense." I said "What doesn't?" And she said "When he says 'When was the last time you rubbed your head?'" And I chuckled a bit and said "I think he said 'When was the last time you loved your hair?'" "Oh, that would make more sense," she said, and it was done. But the whole time I was sitting there, I was thinking about it. It just kept getting funnier in my head. She said she "always" laughed when he said that, meaning that for quite some time she thought the man on the radio was saying "When was the last time you rubbed your head?" And I had a hard time controlling myself. I couldn't actually laugh, because then she'd say "What's so funny?" and I couldn't tell her. It was so hard to hold it in. I tried thinking about different things, like baseball, politics, or ice cream, but I kept going back to it. And then I started spasming a little bit with laughter. I was fighting it so hard that my body kind of jolted a little when I thought about it. But she didn't notice, until I had done it about 8 times, and after the 8th she said "Oh, did that tickle?" :) And that's my boring story for today. :D If you haven't voted for the January 2006 Superlatives, do it now! Because voting ends at midnight tonight. If you don't vote, Mariah Carey will crack your head open with an incredibly high note. (Witchinsider, what do you think of those? :P) That's it for today. Stay strong and have a happy thursday.

El Rocker de Midwest

Yesterday, I was wandering around, doing pretty much nothing, and I decided to google some of my friends. And when I googled "HappyYellowBall" I found something incredibly strange. This is the TV.com guide for an actor named Andrew Dice Clay. And this is the version of it found on Google. Notice anything different? I have no idea why, but that page has somehow been translated to Spanish, then back in to english. It's bizarre, but it's hilarious. Even the title of the page cracked me up: "Clay of the Dices de Andrew." And all the little details just add icing to the cake. "All Shows" became "Everything Demonstrates." "Reviews" became "Revisions." And "Forgot Login?" became "One forgot the connection." ;) I think this counts as "Spanglish." Also note the top bar. For some reason Metacritic translated as "Islands of Pesca." And while I was at it, I went to Babelfish and tried to translate TV.com into Spanish, but that didn't go so well. I don't think the Babelfish site translator works very well. But I did get one good thing out of it: Anatomia del Gris. Guess what show that is. :P Another thing I stumbled across last nite was the brand new "Updates" page. Apparently, I missed this back in January because they've fixed the updates section. It works faster now, and instead of just seeing your friends blog titles, you see their entire blog. Although, it's a little messed up. (BTW, from now on I'm going to scribble in all my screenshots! :P) That's it for today. Don't forget to vote, or Paris Hilton will come after you.... Oh, and there's a mini revolution happening on Angelandspike's blog. Be there, or be left behind. :)

How to watch friends and envy their influence...

There are only 2 whole days left to vote for the Superlatives, so don't forget to. ;) I'm going through a severe case of writer's block. That tends to happen on Tuesday. I'm not sure why, but it does. So I'm just going to link to one of my old blogs, so that all the people who missed this semi-important feature I discovered can be in the loop. This blog entry was about a feature that would allow you to track your friends' blogs in the forum page. Apparently, I was the first person to discover it. :) But more importantly, it keeps track of how many total posts have been made on your blog, including comments. Which, although immature, allows me to keep track of who's popular. :D You should give it a try. I got to thinking about it because now it's become easy to use. Ever since the January site renovation you can use it to blop, and it speeds things up a bit. You can see all of your friends blogs at once and go to one, go back, and go to another. (Or, it used to work that way. I just tried it and... something surprising happened. Go ahead, try it) Plus, it looks cooler. It used to look like this, and now it looks like this. (Oooh... that screenshot will show you what my computer screen looks like... Aren't you interested? ) That's all I can think of for today. Again, don't forget to vote. :)

I'm not giving up on Hoth.

xGowronx's departure reminds me of something. Remember that scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when the Empire is in the process of attacking the rebel base on Hoth and everyone is scrambling to get on to a ship so they can evacuate? And they all say their goodbyes in the middle of the chaos and tell each other that they'll rendezvous later on the new base? Well, that's what things have been feeling like on the site lately. A lot of us feel like we're under attack, like the big AT-ATs of Darth Doody are on the march towards our peaceful home. And a lot of us are leaving. I'm not sure that I'll ever permanently leave, but I have been spending a lot of time at "New Base" lately. ;) I'm sure that at least half of everyone here hasn't even been to new base before, so I'm not concerned that it will become a wasteland over here. What I am concerned about is how much less traffic this site is getting nowadays. Not to mention the fact that the biggest contributers are the ones hurt the most by bugs, so they're either already gone or in the process of leaving. And that's not good. If people keep leaving, this site isn't going to be making any money and the information here is going to become out of date. What I'm saying is that if the bugs don't get fixed, this site could cease to exist. It would not be the first time that something like that happened. A site with serious competition has got to be on the top of its game if it wants to survive. But enough doomsday theories. It's a little bit hypocritical of me to be saying things like that while trying to build morale with the superlatives. Which, by the way, are going well. :) Only three more days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) to get your votes in, and only four more days until we get the results. And from what I've seen of the votes so far, there could be some surprises. That's it for today. Sorry I haven't blogged or blopped for several days. See you guys later. PS: Go make Roxie feel better.

Real Life?

This'll be just a short entry today. I'm going to spend my Saturday out of town, so I'm not going to be around to do all the stuff I normally do. I'm going to leave you guys with a question, and them I'm out: QotD: How has your time on this site positively impacted your real life? ;)

The Nominations for the January 2006 Superlatives

The first step is over! :D We have our nominees! There were plenty of votes, and I'd like to thank everyone who contributed. It was a lot of work, but worth it. This is a lot of fun to do, and again I thank those that help to make it fun. Okay, now on to what you skipped the first paragraph for! The Nominees for "Most Popular" are: Angelandspike Angelsxo Midwestrocker Stig14 Witchinsider The Nominees for "Funniest" are: Chrisbd1 Inyashadude101 Midwestrocker RoxieVelma Stig14 The Nominees for "Most Influential" are: HappyYellowBall Sesho2022 Shelbing Spyrick Stig14 The Nominees for "Best Blog" are: 123home123 Awerlwas Midwestrocker Stig14 xGowronx The Nominees for "Best Blopper" are: Angelandspike Angelsxo Awerlwas Kimba66 Witchinsider The Nominees for "Best Banner" are: Angelsxo Awerlwas Midwestrocker Stig14 Witchinsider The Nominees for "Best Poster" are: Angelandspike Eklummpjr Sesho2022 Stig14 Studog2961 The Nominees for "Smartest" are: Angelandspike Midwestrocker Sesho2022 Stig14 TheOldBill The Nominees for "Most Missed" are: Batman_Beyonder Danasdude Gakhandal HappyYellowBall Stig14 The Nominees for "Best Ranter" are: Angelandspike Lady_Taaluma RoxieVelma Stig14 TheReverend1 The Nominees for "Best Cult" are: The PFP (Points for People) The CoBB (Cult of the Blue Boxies) The CoLU (Cult of the Lazy Users) The CoNB (Cult of the Named Butterfly) Spyrick? (Someone put down Spyrick's name as a cult, and since there were only four other cult nominees, I thought "Why not?") And the Nominees for "Most Polite" are: Angelsxo Awerlwas Calicow Kimba66 LisaGansky Whew. That's alot of nominees. 60 places, 26 different names (minus cults). Here are some other statistics: The people with the most votes were: 1. Stig14 (37) 2. Angelsxo (32) 3. Angelandspike (31) 4. Midwestrocker (31) 5. Sesho2022 (21) The people nominated the most times are: 1. Stig14 (9) 2. Angelandspike (5) 3. Midwestrocker (5) 4. Angelsxo (4) 5. Awerlwas (4) 53% of the nominees are confirmed women, and the entire "Most Polite" category is made up of women. The person with the most votes that wasn't nominated was Afenla, with 6. The total number of votes was 337. :o Which means Stig got almost 11% of all the votes. Okay, I'm done with the statistics. Now on to the process. Final voting now begins. Send me a PM with your choices from each category. No write ins! ;) And you can't vote for yourself. Voting ends next Thursday at midnight, so be sure to have your votes in by then. And be sure to tell me whether this new voting method makes things easier or harder, more fun or less fun. Any feedback you can offer will be appreciated, because the next one of these is only three months away! (I didn't realize that... oh boy) Finally, do not be upset if you did not make in to the nominees. I realize there were a lot more people that didn't make it than did, and you might be a bit less interested in it now that you know you can't win. But remember, this is all for fun, and for a morale boost. We've all been feeling a little bit low lately, and the purpose of this is to give us all something to think about and to give us all another reason to stay here. Keep in mind that the votes for this round were a lot different than the first time I did the superlatives. It's amazing, in fact. Several of the winners from last year weren't even nominated in the categories they won in. And the amount of votes that were cast for people that didn't make it to the nominees was staggering. Anything could happen in May (and I most certainly hope it does). If you stick around and become more involved in the community, you could make it up there. :) Next year I don't think this list will look anything like it looks now. So stay happy, keep voting, and keep on doing that stuff you do. :D That's all, enjoy the voting.

I'm the Kelly Ripa of TV.com

This is the last day of nominations. The polls close tonight. Get your votes in now if you're going to vote. Things are looking better today. We won't have that many ties, but if we do I'll draw names out of a hat as Monster suggested. :) And another thing, I will name the five people with the most votes. The person with the most now has 36 nominations. That's mind-blowing. There's not a lot that I can talk about, having blown all my creativity on the other place. I feel like Kelly Ripa: trying to be on two shows at once and maintain the crappiness of both. It's a hard thing to do. ;) But I think I'll manage. I'm watching a show called "First Wave" today. I had never heard of it before, but they're having a big marathon today that has drawn in one of my 'rents. It... it does not seem good. I am watching the first season though, and first seasons are almost never good. I just can't imagine that any show starring a Van Damme look-a-like could get very good. For the past couple of months or so I've been at level 24. A member of the CoLU can't really advance very far. :) (Want to know just how lazy the CoLU is? So lazy that I haven't even gotten around to officially creating it) But, not submitting has its advantages. For instance, I don't have to deal with waiting for my subs to be accepted, I don't have to deal with any submissions bugs, and I don't have to deal with any users who don't know how to submit things properly. :D So my blood pressure is probably a lot lower than everybody else's. That's it for today. Be sure to stop by for tomorrow's big day. :)

One More Day...

Voting ends tomorrow at midnight. :o So if you haven't gotten your votes in, you better hurry up. By the way, I'm having a little trouble counting the votes (I'm doing that ahead of time so I'm not caught off guard by any problems, like the one I'm facing). You see, we have an 8 way tie in one of the categories. And another one of the categories has only 2 people with more than two votes... and a whole bunch of other people with only one vote. So I have quite the dilemma. I've tried to think of a creative way to solve this, and I'm going to attempt something: American Idol style voting. You can vote again! Anyone who wants to can vote one more time today, and then one more time tomorrow. I know that the majority of you probably don't want to do that , but we just need a couple more votes to make things work. Okay, on to other things. Has anyone else noticed how often the news personalities demonstrate Olympic sports for us? I just saw Katie Couric showing America what "Skiing" is. Apparently, it's some new sport in which people stand on boards and slide down a mountain. Yeah, she put on the boards, and picked up some kind of sticks, and proceeded to push herself around on the snow. It was fascinating. I'm so grateful that I was watching the Today show this morning, because otherwise I'd be totally out of the loop on this "skiing" thing. Yesterday I was thinking about just how much time I spend on this site. Is it unusual for a person to spend hours on one website? How much time do you guys spend on the site? And how much time do you spend on the homepage? It's littered with all these goodies, and I've always wondered how often people looked at the trivia of the day, or the news, or the "Sound-off" section? Is all of that stuff a waste of precious effort? Well, that's all for today. I'm going to blop around for a bit and see what's going on, and then I'm going to... do that again. ;) Cya.

262 Names

They just don't know when to stop, do they? I just clicked on "New Blog Post," and what did I see? An ad! More than an ad, an entirely different page. I was taken to some kind of survey page, where I was asked "What kind of cable or satellite service do you receive?" I can't believe that! It's not enough that the whole site is falling apart, but now we're being redirected to survey pages? No wonder all of the problems we're having aren't being fixed: they are too busy coming up with new and unseemly ways to make money. Oh well. The turnout yesterday was excellent. The spreasheet full of votes now has over 262 names. :o Many of them, however, were the same. The person with the most nominations was _______ and they had 28! The second most was ________ and they had 24, and the third most was ________ and they had 22 (enjoy filling those blanks... privately). I would like to thank all of you for both your votes, and the speed with which you voted. It just poured in; At 10 o'clock yesterday I checked my messages and had 3. I looked at those, put their votes in the spreadsheet then checked my messages again at 10:10. And I had 3 more! It was very fun and I thank all of you for participating. That's it for today. I'm going to spend a bit of time away from the site today, so I'll see you guys tomorrow. :)
