GH:Aerosmith and SOCOM: Confrontation

Got a review for Guitar Hero Aerosmith and a preview for SOCOM Confrontation up on Gaming Excellence now:

GH:A - http://www.gamingexcellence.com/ps3/games/1129/review.shtml

SOCOM - http://www.gamingexcellence.com/ps3/games/1322/p20081006.shtml

Really not impressed by the glorified expansion pack that was Guitar Hero Aerosmith even if it is a solid game itself. Bleh. SOCOM was fun but there were so many freaking issues with the Beta that I never actually completed a game to its end. I'd get disconnected, not be able to tell what was going on and quit or any other of a number of problems. I'm sure those won't be in the release (like not showing names on the scoreboard) but there were some peculiar problems cropping up like it directing me to the wrong base to set a bomb...

Absence

So yeah, I know I haven't been around a huge lot lately but there's a good reason for that. About sometime in June/July I took a job interview for GameSpot as a game guide writer to replace Matthew Rorie. I was intensely nervous at the prospect of picking up after someone whose guides I not only used but rather enjoyed reading. But I figured it couldn't hurt to take the interview and I really want to move out of Connecticut, I really don't like it here.

Months pass and pass with no real contact from the guy I took my interview with and I rapidly realized that they were likely busy over there so I would, instead of worrying about the interview, focus on getting better at writing FAQs and game guides. This is why I haven't been around much, I've been working on a number of these to try and get better at what I love doing.

So now we're almost in October and I finally get a response back from them. Apparently I was almost picked but the other guy managed to hedge in "by the barest of margins". I'm not angry at GS for not picking me, I don't have anything from college and I've only been writing FAQs for going on two years. So I don't have a grudge about this.

However waiting so many months and hoping to all that's holy that I get the job and then to not... it's left me rather apathetic. Pair that up with the fact that I nobody is hiring freelancers anymore due to budget problems and I'm just feeling so bleh lately. I'm definitely not really feeling that drive I felt before towards writing FAQs and reviews. I just don't really see the point until in pushing myself when I don't stand a chance of getting hired in this lineof work for another year or two at least and have my BA in something.

This isn't me whining or looking for pats on the back. I just want to let people know why I'm not going to be online much. If anyone PMs or e-mails me then I will definitely respond but don't expect to see a lot of new blog posts or anything. Other than work I do for Gaming Excellence and some stuff I agreed to do for IGN, I likely won't be doing too much online.

Bourne Conspiracy Review up!

Bourne Conspiracy review is up on Gaming Excellence.

http://www.gamingexcellence.com/xbox360/games/1168/review.shtml

I've been doing a lot of these reviews and trying to find work lately, to not much effect. I've been offered to write exclusive FAQs for IGN (ie. they give me game, I write FAQ and get to keep game) but nothing paying as of yet. I've applied for a few actual jobs with both IGN and GameSpot but I'm not holding my breath. To that end I've decided to go to an online college to get a Bachelors in something, hopefully related to journalism. Unfortunately CT really stinks about this so I have to wait a bit on that one. Ah well.

Top 5 Rated Wii Games... My Thoughts

Why is it that of the top 5 games for the Wii only 1 is a full Wii game? Let's run down the list here.

Super Mario Galaxy (97%) - The only real Wii game in the top five. I can't reiterate how desperately I disagree with this rating though. Between the spastic controls due to gravity changes and general nuisance of using the pointer and Mario at the same time... meh. However it's a Wii exclusive and uses the Wii controls exclusively so let's move along...

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (94%) - While playing this on the Wii made using any of the ranged weapons a snap the melee combat was so annoying on the Wii. Pulling off advanced maneuvers is ridiculous, the spin attack is annoying and by the time you're done your wrist hurts more than if you had a serious bout of ma... manual labor. The game is much better on the Gamecube due to the removal of this issue if nothing else.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (93%) - You might be wondering why I don't list this as a "full" Wii game. Well let's analyze the facts; the game controls almost exactly like SSB and SSBM, not much has changed besides new characters and more clones. Oh and the game is STILL best played with a Gamecube controller. Seriously, WTF Nintendo? You're abandoning your own controllers now.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (91%) - My favorite Wii game! It was also my favorite Gamecube game and one of my favorite PS2 games. Catching the pattern here? Sure it was much easier to aim the gun most of the time but if you can get it on two other systems it hardly counts. Next!

Okami (90%) - While this is a PS2 game as well I would have been so ready to label this the definitive version of the game if the controls weren't horrible. I don't know how they managed to mess this one up but sure as heck they did. That, plus the IGN watermark "scandal" and this is just embarassing.

There's more success for Nintendo games using the Wii controls in the bottom 5 of the top 10. The only one that really bears much noting is Boom Blox since Metroid Prime 3 is a horrible game, Guitar Hero 3 obviously doesn't count, Zak and Wiki is a giant point and click with Mini-games (still fun though) and Super Paper Mario works just fine.

I realize that aggregate sites aren't a great way of gathering games by quality, it's all up to opinion. However I by and large trust professional game reviewers so long as they aren't part of the Game Informer magazine crew so I'm more inclined to listen to these sorts of sites. The only thing I refuse to listen to them on is the quality of Metal Gear Solid 4 and GTA 4. They suckered me in with their LIES about Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, that won't happen again. Anyone who talks about how great the gameplay was in MGS2 I'm always tempted to beat them with a stick that reads "There isn't any gameplay in MGS2."

Freaking Kojima...

Yeah I'm kind of ramble/ranting. It's just the sort of mood I'm in after making the mistake of posting on the GFAQs forums. Buncha low IQ... *mumblemuble*

Console Exclusivity: A Rant

I'm sure that many of you saw the title and thought that this would be a rant about "exclusivity is dead" and "Square sold out when they said they're porting FF13 to the brick" or whatever. Well it isn't, not really. What I'm going to rant about instead is games that are more deceitful, games that claim to be system exclusives and then get ported a few months down the line. Games like Fable, Jade Empire and Halo have all done this but perhaps the most recent egregious offenders are Bioshock and Gears of War.

It's not a game switching consoles that really grinds my nerves. Oh sure, I bought a PS3 thinking that I would need it to play Devil May Cry 4, Assassins Creed and Final Fantasy 13... if I even bothered buying it considering all the details of it, ugh (FF X-2's director on the heels of the soap opera that was FF12? I think not). But I'm not the sort of person who is fanboy enough to be bothered by this. I bought all of the systems to enjoy their unique attributes. I enjoy Achievements and Xbox Live but I like FREE online gaming on the PS3 and the exclusives to that console as well. The Wii... well I bought it for the VC and have thusfar been stymied by Nintendos reluctance to help me out any (too many games and I refuse to play swap out with an SD card). So I view this sort of thing as a benefit to gamers everywhere. Everyone gets to enjoy the game instead of just one consoles worth of gamers.

So instead of that particular axe to grind I find a new one, the one of exclusives that jump ship instead. Let's take an example:

Bioshock had a pretty big opening, selling oodles and oodles of games on both the PC and Xbox 360. It was lauded wide and large as a great game in the genre and a wildly intruiging storyline mixed with the first person elements to create a game like Deus Ex: The Invisible War more than Halo. It was great, it was one of the best games released that year. Hurrah, hurrah!

So how does 2K reward those people who bought it on the 360 and dealt with the widescreen cropping bug? How do they reward those people who dealt with their stupid SecuRom authentication setup? To those unfortunate souls who bought the limited edition and had to deal with broken Big Daddy statuettes? Simple, they port it without any of the problems to the PS3. But that's not all, the PS3 gets exclusive content, content that will likely never appear on the Xbox or PC versions of the game. Their way of saying "thank you" to all those who bought the original game and made it such a huge success is what essentially amounts to a giant middle finger waving in the air at them as they roll around in their money.

Nice.

Mind you this isn't some console fanboy bitterness. As an owner of all three systems (and the PSP to boot) I could very easily pick up Bioshock for the PS3 and shelve it right next to my copy of it for the 360. I've invested a lot of time into the game to find all of the audio diaries and to get all of the Achievements but I would enjoy the new challenges as well. However I will not be buying the game unless I buy it used from someone because I will not give my money to 2K for something like this. There are ways to go about something like this without totally snubbing those very people who made your game such a success and apparently they aren't quite aware of this.

Take Overlord for example. It was initially only for the PC and Xbox 360 as well but they decided to port it to the PS3. Included in the package, for free, is all of the downloadable content you could get for the 360 and a few minor additions like a mini-map. Since Overlord is now cheap for the 360 it isn't actually a big deal since you could purchase the DLC and the game cheap but if you don't have a 360 now you can experience the game in its entirety. The free inclusion of the DLC is their way of excusing the fact that PS3 owners are paying 50-60 USD for the game while 360 owners only need to pay 20 for the game and maybe 15 for the DLC. But this makes sense seeing as how it's been out on the 360 for awhile, if the PS3 owners wait they can get it on the cheap as well and everyone is happy.

However this is something that even Microsoft enjoys to watch its customers suffer for (as if Vista wasn't enough). Gears of War for the PC comes right to mind and annoys me straight away. Not that Gears wasn't a good game, it was pretty good. Barring the grunting monkey of a script and the fact that Dom was the only character with any personality it was fun to play. However the narrative of that game jumped around more than a monkey on speed and just generally made less sense the further into the game you got. By the time the squad escaped from the Brumak and teleported to the train station for some reason I was more than a bit frustrated with what was going on.

Turns out that they decided to fix this and add a little section on to this abysmally short game when they ported it to the PC. Sure an extra half hour isn't that big of a deal but when the game itself is only six/six and a half hours long then it's quite an improvement. And while Epic was pretty good about releasing all those online maps for free after a short wait 360 owners who made GoW practically the next Halo were shafted out of this. It's a small thing but seriously, what's the deal? There's no real reason that this couldn't be backwards ported to the 360 as a nice little reward to those same fans who made your game more than just a blip on the radar.

But I suppose I just don't understand business. Or rather I do understand the gaming industry. They work on the same mentality that George Lucas does. "Keep rereleasing stuff with new little tid-bits thrown in so as to entice people to buy our game multiple times." I say forget that little game they're trying to play. Buy your games used if you have to indulge this little bit of tomfoolery on the part of game developers. This way the money goes to whomever you bought it from instead of lining their pockets as they do their best to basically spit in the faces of all those fans who bought their little games.

Thank you for reading. Coming up next on Misfits Rant theater, the Nintendo Wii. Stay tuned!

Job Openings at Gaming Excellence

The big boss at GE asked that we let people know about job openings at their website. While this is a volunteer site it's very professionally done and they take this whole reviewing issue fairly seriously. In short it's a great springboard if you're looking to get into the industry. So I'm posting a link to their job postings at Game Jobs. If you're interested feel free to apply but only do so if you're serious please.

That out of the way I'm no longer sick, my Xbox is on its way home after harassing Microsoft about it having gone missing from their repair center and my rant is pretty much done. I've just been obsessing over it. I don't want it to sound fanboyish one way or the other nor to be too... malicious. All three companies are worthy of scorn but I don't want it to go from poking fun at their stupid ways to being just downright mean. I save that sort of business for talking about game developers themselves. :D Oh and that day will come soon, oh yes. Very soon, muwaha!

As soon as I stop obsessing over minor details like the OCD laden spaz I've been lately. Ah well.

Condemned 2 Review up!

My review for Condemned 2: Bloodshot was posted up on Gaming Excellence a bit ago but I've been pretty sick. It can be found here: Condemned 2 Review. On other news my Xbox 360 broke, not the three rings of death mind you, but my fan. You see my roommate is always cold, no matter how hot it is. So I never get to use the AC like I should and must suffer for it. This has led to both my PS3 and 360 having fan issues within less than a month and a half thanks to our heat wave over here. Ugh. Stopped a project I was working on dead in the water which is just wonderful.

Tonight I'm going to work on my write up as to why all three console developers are garbage and after that I've got a rant about Metal Gear coming this way so yay for that!

Diablo 3!!!!

Okay, I don't normaly ramble about games I'm looking forward to, but seriously... It's Diablo 3! Sequel to one of the greatest game series of all times. Warcraft? Pfft, garbage. Starcraft? Couldn't care less. GTA IV, Halo 3 and MGS 4? *YAWN*

But this....

Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo,Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo,Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo,Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo,Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo, Diablo!!!

Viking Battle for Asgard Reviewed

This is just a quickie blog post. I'm still working on my rant on the three consoles but I've been busy with some reviews for Gaming Excellence and trying to make some money with freelance work so I've been having a slow go of it. I have managed to complete a review for Viking: Battle for Asgard in the meanwhile. I figured I'd put a new spin on it when reviewing it. Instead of getting hung up on the flying limbs I decided to not mention them and instead focus on the actual gameplay and the deficiencies therein. It's amazing how anyone could score that game higher than a 7/7.5 at best when it more or less just screams "UNFINISHED" at every turn. When you drop the ball on the musical score (as in you don't even really have one) your game is in some really bad shape.

Hopefully my review for Condemned 2 will be finished and posted soon.
