I think Danny is making some fair points. But they are overridden by the fact that Gamespot is the one who is objectifying the value of the games with reviews. If Danny wants to take his point to it's conclusion then he needs to make the case that reviews should be done away with. Or there should at least be multiple reviews to account for the spread of personal bias. Personally, I think that regardless of what he said, there are still ways to objectively review any game regardless of how we come at the game. If we are someone like him then we need to recognize that our history with gaming might create a bias in our exceptions and try to evaluate the game both from that framework and from a more objective framework. If you want to argue that that's not possible then again I think you have to drop the pretense of a score which distills the value of the game into a numerically comparable continuum.
@loafofgame @Mooninites1986 @RobDev @frozenuxx You may have a case for that but as long as GS continues to make use of a score then they are at least ostensibly distilling the value of the game into an objective number which falls in fixed continuum shared with other games. Therefore, whether you have a point or not, people can make the case that the review is unjustified based on similar criteria used to evaluate other games and distill a relative score.
I've seen a lot of people doing exactly that.
I've also tried to do what you are saying and point out what I think makes the game great and why Kevin's complaints are unjustified. In this case it seems his distate for the unfocused narrative and "repetative experiences" significantly detracted from his enjoyment of the game. I made the case before that I don't see this as justifying his conclusion because other games that he reviewed (Dark Souls) had much more "abysmal storytelling" and repetitive elements but he managed to look past those things in that case.
@RobDev @Mooninites1986 @loafofgame @frozenuxx There's nothing subjective about that comment. It's an objective phenomenon that many people have recognized. There is a trend in our culture to actively dislike things merely because they are considered mainstream or popular. Disliking things gives people a sense of superiority because it makes them feel like they stand in evaluation over everything and exercising negativity is a powerful way of expressing that.
@RobDev @Mooninites1986 @loafofgame @frozenuxx Yeah this is the problem with this postmodern approach to everything. No one can ever make a case for saying something is objectively good or bad. I've been making the case that it's a good game. If that's true then I've also theorized why other people seem to dislike what should be considered on objectively good game. I'm not incapable of comprehending that other people have different opinions about the game, what I am doing is trying to make the case that those opinions are flawed on some level. If we can't even have this basic exchange about the objective quality of a game then there is no hope for more important things like ethics, philosophy, politics, or theology.
@loafofgame @Mooninites1986 Yeah I mean that's basicly the reality of the situation. I just think on some level perhaps if a website is going to attempt to review a game it should try to be as objective as possible. If we are going to attempt to score a game and provide an evaluation of it then it should at least be approached somewhat objectively
@RobDev @loafofgame @frozenuxx Ironicly this is the very thing you keep doing Rob. You seem to keep blasting me with sarcasm and expletives because I dare to disagree with Kevin's opinion. You seem to be the one who is unable to comprehend that I have a different opinion, namely that this game deserves better than a 6.
@TenraiSenshi I don't doubt what you are saying. I am merely pointing out that it's a problem because it realitivizes the scores to such a degree that the numbers because almost meaningless, or at least impossible to interpret. It's possible that Kevin would have given Titanfall a 6 or 7 or maybe even lower. But all this means is that Kevin's 6 of an FPS is someone elses 8 or 9. The reason why the OP was comparing the two games was not because Kevin reviewed them but because they can be legitimately placed side by side. Destiny offers almost anything that Titanfall offered but it does more and it provides a richer more fluid experience in the process. If Titanfall is a 9/10 game then one might make the case that Destiny is equal to or better to Titanfall and thus deserves a higher score.
@coldspell6 The whole thing is just a wonderfully fluid experience. I love the idea of the crucible. Bungie managed to fold the multiplayer into the game in really unique and interesting way. And don't even get me started at how beautiful this game is
