Since the days earliest days of Islam in the Middle East, that region of the world has always been one of the most advanced technologicaly and progressive socially.
I think that alot of the people saying that Islam is highly violent and is the cause of Terrorism are missing the point. The middleast in the 20th century after the fall of the Ottoman Empire created a power vaccum in the region which became exploited by western nations. The British proped up the Wahabbi sect of Islam in Saudi Arabia effectivly uniting that region under the control of this extremist, highly conservative sect which in turned spilled out into numerous middle eastern nations who had a weak foundation for a government because so many were newly formed at the time and were able to lead revolutions against very progressive or moderate leaders who were either too weak to stay in power or had little public confidence because they were proped up by western nations. You have similar examples in Iran where an attempt to nationalze the oil indutry in the 50's led to an coup led by the US and Briton eventually leading to the Corrrupt Shah taking control of the nation. A disgruntled and undereducated populace united under the banner of people like the Ayatollah who promised justice, equality etc, yet turned on the people who brought them up and instilled a theocratic dictatorship.
The situation in the Middle East has little to do with religion it is an economic and social problem stemming from the instillation of extremist regimes who take advantage of a poor, desperate and undereducated population. The problem IS NOT ISLAM, THE PROBLEM IS PUTTING FOOD ON ONES PLATE. whenthe people are fed, the people can be educated, when they are educated they can unite and when they can unite they can take on governments who use the fanatization of relgion to instill fear and control in an undereducated populace.
