I'm sorry, but to say that they weren't great innovators is not true. No group before them used the studio as an instrument to the extent that they did, especially after they stopped touring, and crafted pop songs that were just as melodic as the ones before.

Every musician in any genre of music has drawn on 'what went before' and either rehashed what was already there (usually not for the better) or pushed the boundaries further. The Beatles fall into the latter group; not too mention the non-musical factors that made them influential in pop culture.

Would that not be more to the credit of George Martin...I believe his name was...and not the band?

In the beginning, but they quickly took direction of where they wanted the music to go and Martin served as more of guide to help them reach those goals.

Stormtroopers are based on the dna of Jango Fett, not Boba. Jango didn't do to well against the jedi if I remember. Boba Fett and Jango aren't mandalorians by the way. That is a common misunderstanding that people have.

[QUOTE="Hopkins_J"]You have to give these guys credit for "paving the way".quiglythegreat
their music was based on what was going on around in their heads. music is powerful because it has meaning for us, and all meaning is socially established. this means that all music can really only progress within its known bounds. for the Beatles, they drew on pre-existing themes in rock and jazz, and popular cultural ideas of their time. they were not great innovators. generally speakiing, great innovators in music are those who discover by accident new ways of using technology, though there are exceptions. I love the Beatles, but they were essentially just excellent at regurgitating the best of what they had been hearing all their lives, like many other talented musicians, but for this reason, they cannot be said to have added anything new to music, merely to have progressed it to a logical and in some ways all ready present outcome.

what about Buddy Holly?Nifty_Shark

Buddy Holly led to the Beatles, but it is hard to determine what he would have done if he had lived.

I've heard them a lot, starting back when I was about 5 and they did it in the room next to me. :| I'm sure they know that I hear them, but it's kind of the thing that we never talk about. Headphones go on Saturday night and stay on for a few hours.Bloodbath_87

Same thing happened to me when I was a teenager. I did the music thing too.

I haven't heard of many of these groups. I'll have to look them up.
