This is typical MS tactics for you, and the prime reason I wish them to get fried in the console wars! It's not healthy for one company to take over markets like they do, and proceed to govern them by spanking consumers with the dollar-bat. So what should we do? Buy Blu-Ray for our living room and PC needs, get Linux and refuse to purchase MS products and rather rip them and share them online in a an epic scale...

Oh wait, this is already happening. It really sucks that a company that's really brought PC's to todays level is the same company that could be their demise as a gaming platform! They owe us PC gamers some more loyalty.

Ok, Crovax, just a couple of things before I take my ignorance (of course I have to be stupid since I'm not an American...) and get out of here:

1. Of course nostalgic feeelings are biased and sometimes even unfounded, but ask people who have been playing games since the late 80's or early 90's, most will agree that the magic is gone and that the gaming industry has become a peepee contest. Games today are like mainstream pop music, they sell, they're mostly mediocre or bad, and they are shortlived or easily forgotten (most that is, there are exceptions.)

2. Mass appeal is not only about capturing people within one age group who have diverse interests.
How many games on 360 (or PS3) appeal to a person above age 50 or below age 10?
And how many games would even be comprehendable by such groups?
Also, with so called "tweens" becoming more and more important customers, will it serve to have almost half your titles rated M or above?

3. I don't really care much what your uncle says, he can just as easily be made up for all I know to further your point of view (it's the web afterall). And I'd love to link you to show the weak sales, but most people here are not well versed in Norwegian!
Racing games and RPG's are the real sellers here in Norden, so the next-gen consoles fall extremely short so far, allthough I hope they'll pick up the slack.
As for Gamespot's game reviews; I give them little merit in their view, and you'll find that most other similar websites sometimes disagree rather fiercely... There's a reason many people are calling them X-Spot nowadays.
That graphic compariosn feature really removed all credibility on my part regarding this site.

4. Windows? Are there any aternatives? Save for Linux (which is bollocks...)?
Hmm, no. Because MS bought or choked the market and created a monopoly.
I-Pod was the first of it's kind, and so it got a lot of attention in the west, naturally.
You'll see now in europe that people buy equal shares of other mp3 players.
Coca-Cola has the worlds biggest advertising budget, and they were the first commercially distributed soda worldwide. If you're first, you get to dig in more deeply.
There's that nostalgy you don't care for also in this equation of Coca-Cola sales, everyone knows about it.
Pepsi? Because it's a damn good drink, Coke tastes nothing imo...
Here in Norden, under 2 % of all cars are american, and less than 4% of all electronic devices are american, so not everything is "selling like crazy" over here.

5. The PS2 was very expensive when it came out, and people yelled and screamed all over.
Guess what? It sold s h i t loads!
And it's not really a commendable feat for a console to outsell another based solely on price... MS tried this with the X-Box as well, thinking the price tag and the processor would conquer the world.
Seems it taught them little last gen.
It's mostly about the software, and as time goes by, 360 will probably maintain the X-Box image of macho shooters and mimick racers and be off to the same postion come next gen.

d151: I agree with you, completely.
Rehashes and regurcitated "revolutions" (Bioshock) litter the gaming market, and it's getting worse.
All the best games I've played are mostly from the mid 90's to the early millennium years.
And let's face it, even the most diehard fan:
360 does NOT have mass appeal yet, and there's a crazy abundance of shooters compared to for instance PS2 or any Nintendo franchise!
360 is selling like crap here in Norway, and all of Scandinavia (no we're not numerous, but we have the dough!), and that's mostly due to the lack of variation in games and sometimes the quality of them.
The 360 is a very american product, and such does not fare very well in Europe and Asia.
But that's what MS chose to make, and they have to live with it.
No matter how many exclusives they "snag" from PS3, they can't win on multiplat's alone, and that just seems like a strange strategy to me.
Anyway, d151, good post.
Ahh, Betrayal at Krondor... Games like that will never resurface... :(
