It's the same price as the 3DS at launch, which didn't sell too well at $250. I don't think specs or value for money are that important to the end user, people expect a certain price range for handhelds, and like the PS3 which even at $599 Sony was losing money, people aren't willing to pay that price for a gaming device.
I think the PSVita launch will go more smoothly if they have uncharted and other decent games at launch, but at the $250 price tag, I'm not sure people will be flooding the stores to pick one up, regardless of it giving more value for money than the 3DS at it's original $250 price.
The difference is people hated the 3DS launch price, when Sony announced the Vitas price people were impressed. Also don't forget that pre-orders have sold out pretty much everywhere.
