Brutal compression. Yikes.

I'm only using the foliage texture mod from the Nexus. There's some surprisingly good assets in Dark Souls.

There is no AA you can apply to Dark Souls other than crappy injected SMAA or FXAA. This is all downsampling with DSfix. Although, resolution\downsampling is another form of AA.

I wasn't really happy with any of the shots towards the end of the game. So here's just these 3 to wrap it up.

Now anxiously awaiting Dark Souls 2!

With modern resolutions there's little to be gained.

Well that's not true at all

I noticed that there's never more than x8 and in most games its x4 MSAA. Where is the x32 we used to see in early 2000 and such? Is x4 MSAA as good as x32 and the reason we don't see x32 these days?

Rendering engines are different. You now have deferred lighting engines which can REALLY take a hit when you try to even apply something like 4xMSAA. And when you see 4xMSAA, you can't just compare that to 16xAA you used to see in games and say it's worse.

Nowadays, you have texture aliasing, transparency aliasing, sub-pixel aliasing, geometry aliasing, and shader aliasing. As you can see by their names, the things that cause them vary quite a bit, so you need different forms of AA to tackle them.

For example, transparency aliasing. This is what happens when you have a simple surface that uses a transparent texture to give the illusion of complexity. MSAA can not be applied to these traditionally, which is why it can't fix things like aliased chain-link fences or foliage. You need something that can specifically target transparency aliasing. Usually this requires a form of supersampling.

@NeoEnigma: Dem screens. Always with the gorgeous screens, Neo. It really is a shame how terrible GS's new image posting system is. Especially for your screens, I'd suggest that you just host them somewhere else that doesn't compress them, like Minus, then give us a link to see them elsewhere. I, for one, would definitely take the time to check them out. Your screens are amazing.

Thanks. And it's really only the embedded images that are compressed and small. If you middle click on any of them or open them in a new tab, they are the shots I uploaded. Like take look at these on the gamespot server:

Full size 1

Full size 2

The original IQ is intact. But I'm sure a lot of people would just prefer to see the original resized to fit in the browser. You'd need to set some rules though... and limit the number of posts per page in a thread like this. For example, the PC screenshot thread on GAF encourages full sized images with no compression, and limits you to 2 images per post. It really forces you to be selective and choose the best ones worth showing.

But here's another. I call it "OH CRAP OH CRAP OH CRAP RUNNING RUNNING RUNNING"

yeah man, im also in that position ur in forced to buy a shtty nvidia card. Ah well

wat? The 780ti eats pretty much any AMD card's lunch. Then there's the additional software features you get in various games, as well as SGSSAA support. Nvidia has always been able to price their cards high because they're NOT crap.

And for anyone obsessed with image quality, nvidia is the only way to go. AMD still has terrible downsampling support.

Does "stress test" mean anyone can get in? Or is it still very much a closed beta?

Really don't like this goofy screenshot layout thing. 1280 max width? Yuck. Let's see how silly I can make this....

They should just let folks link to images if they want and the browser should resize in the same manner that GAF does it. My screenshots look good at all sizes there.

Yeeeaaah. Not a fan of posting images here anymore, sadly.

Yeah. Not digging some of the forum changes. Quoting is awkward. The post goes beside the quote and wraps under. First forum I've ever seen in the history of everything that's done that.

Yeah, this new quoting system is god-awful. Regarding the screens, I never thought the 800-width limit was really a problem, since the site had built-in resizing tools in the post menu, and you could just open them in a new tab to see full size. And even now, with larger pics in the forum itself, they still don't appear full size until opening them in a separate window. In fact, they appear even smaller than 800-width. Looks like 500 or so.

Also, I noticed something upon opening your pics (awesome as always, by the way) in a new tab. The images are hosted here at gamespot. Did you upload those here? Or does GS now automatically re-host images that are linked in forum posts?

The forum uploads them and hosts them here apparently. For me, the images stretch out as large as the browser will allow them. So I'm seeing my screenshots go wider than 800. Probably closer to 1200. But the browser resizing makes them look a bit blurry.
