I'd say the value for a game like that is directly proportional to the time it's released. There is no resale value in one of those games of course. Like you said.

But to take your stock market analogy one step further; I don't look at a new game as a strictly monetary decision. You will get a higher fun dividend if you invest early, but once the servers are down it's like a fad that has passed and buying in at that point would be unwise. I mean I wouldn't invest in a company that makes VHS tapes in 2013 for example, and I wouldn't pick up a copy of MAG in 2013 either. But if I'd invested early, in either of them, it might have paid off in either a windfall of stock or fun, respectively.

This. I think that when it comes to multiplayer, the timing of your purchase and wherever a game is at in its lifespan are critical factors.

I came into this topic with MAG on my mind. I started playing it shortly after it came out, and it's definitely provided me with hours upon hours of entertainment (started as Raven, vetted to Valor, and then S.V.E.R., just to give you an idea). Was it worth it? Hell yes! But if someone were to buy the game now, would it be worth it now? Hell no!

It's one thing I hate about multiplayer-only games (specifically ones that rely on dedicated servers ran by publishers/developers as opposed to client-side). It's a ship that hangs around only for a while, but once it's sailed, it's sailed.

As an aside, I can't help but think of how many new/used copies of MAG are on shelves at discounted prices right now. It's a fun game but hate to see it go.

I have never played The Longest Journey, but I am aware that it gets positive marks from a lot of people. With that in mind plus being a fan of survival horror, I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

I go through gaming ups and downs as well, and I know I've hit a down whenever I feel that I'm practically forcing myself to play something. As a result, I try to pace myself by limiting my playtime to 2-3 hours at a time, and it helps to have other things to do to break the monotony whenever game-boredom does kick in (I like to play guitar/keyboard on the side).

Sometimes I burn out playing games, but I never tire of watching others. With that said, I find that hopping over to TwitchTV helps me (in a sense). It's fun watching others take a swing at games, and watching people on Twitch have fun with their games will sometimes give me the push I need to pick up the controller again.

To answer the original question of the topic, I am not surprised in the least bit. Having frequented the website for the past few years, I find the reviews by GameSpot to be very hit-or-miss; reviews trash games I like, and others favor games I don't like. On top of that, I take any and all reviews (not only from here but elsewhere) with a grain of salt, because reviews are done by people who have their own thoughts and interpretations as well.

I also read into things a certain way as well. For example, Carolyn Petit suggests in her review (and I paraphrase) that the game doesn't really bring anything "innovative" or new to the table. While that may be a bad thing on one hand, I can also look at the other hand - I can rest assured knowing that, with AO, I'd most likely be getting a Batman game akin to AA and AC - both kickass games in their own right. Getting more of the same is (sometimes) not a bad thing, depending on who you are and the things you like or dislike.
Just my 2 cents.

Haven't fully decided on a Halloween game yet, but I'm leaning towards giving F.E.A.R. (plus DLC) a shot. It'd be my first ever playthrough, plus a chance to knock out a game on my ever-growing backlog of Steam games (them damn sales, man).

Metalcore is a subgenre of metal that I very rarely listen to. But, a lesser known band I would like to recommend is Shades of Dusk, particularly their album Quiescence. They are kind of a death metal/metalcore hybrid, but the vocals are generally understandable.

You might also like the bands Light This City and Age of Ruin.

Let's see. What all did I get:

Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY
Battlefield Pack
Bioshock 2
Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition
Fallout 3 GOTY
Garshasp: The Monster Slayer
Hydrophobia: Prophecy
Just Cause 2 + All the DLC
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Terraria
Universe Sandbox

I would've bought a lot more if I didn't have bills to pay. On a side note, I both love and hate these Steam sales. While they're such great deals on superb games, they're also major contributors to my backlog. I still have games from sales 2 years ago that I haven't gotten around to yet.

I've only played Deus Ex and Half-Life. Of those two, I prefer Deus Ex. One of these days, I'll get around to playing SS2.
