Not true. Some early stand alone models are not upgradable.
Again, EVERY blu-ray player, even the early offerings from Sony and Samsung, have the ability for firmware upgrades, whether it be via ethernet ports, burning the firmware onto a CD and installing it, or by sending it in to an authorized service center. Not one has been locked into a certain firmware and non-upgradeable. Updated firmware for the earliest players may not be available today, due to the release in newer models, but all players have had the ability to be upgraded.
I read a little something not to long ago stating that the older Blu-ray players CANNOT be upgraded to a newer firmware or gain Blu-ray movie updates. There are indeed LOCKED. Not sure where you're getting your info from, but the place I got mine from claims a different tale.
