Good subject.
I've played RPG's since the days of Dungeon Dragon and Final Fantasy 1 when it oringally came out.
In terms of design I prefer the JRPG's more since there is more variety. Western RPG's seem to use the typical midevil Europe settings which are usually pretty blah. JRPG's on the other hand use a variety of artistic styles when creating their world.
JRPG's on the other hand as was mentioned by the OP and as I'm sure many others always have a prissy looking hero. I just finished Lost Odyssey and couldn't give two craps about Kiam, but his supporting cast was well done.
In the end it comes down to game play. Anything which deviates or adds onto the typical formula is what makes the difference. The Witcher with its click based attacking system was greate, and LO ring system added a much needed new element to an otherwise old tried and true formula.
If it happens to be a JRPG all the better because if I have to look at one more castle I'm gonna throw up.
