however, if you are gonna game a better GPU is better than a CPU. You could upgrade to a 4770. So get the atholon x2 2.8 regor($60) and pair that with a 4770 it will be a sufficient gaming machine.

The motherboard and RAM that you would have to buy for that processor are a bit pricey.

Yeah, i don't really like that psu either. It is up to him and if he is willing to spring for the added security that the psu would offer.

I actually just upgraded from an 8800 GT to a GTX 275. The difference is outstanding. I play games like Crysis, Grid, Cod4, and the new Wolfenstein at highest allowed settings, 1680X1050 on an Acer monitor, flawlessly. I have my card paired with an Core 2 Duo E8500 and 3gig of ddr2 800mhz. Just get the card...
