@doa2169: The point of the article was to reply to a criticism circulating that is equally as pointless.

Something I've advocated for since Day 1 they released the FF7 remake trailer - Please do NOT give us the same game with remade visuals. I do not want the same gameplay mechanics, and I would even go as far as saying a change in plot points and/or chronology would be welcome. A remake is not a remaster. Bad remakes remodels the same thing from before, whilst good remakes does something novel.

We can take a lesson from film remakes. Good remakes are entirely different and independent films from their source material. Infernal Affairs remade to The Departed is a good remake. Ben-Hur and Oldboy are bad remakes.

Good remakes know that the point of remaking a film is to import familiar themes of the source material to a new generational or cultural landscape. It's not about restraining oneself to the same plot points, same setting, etc. Failure typically comes from failing to recognize and express the relevant themes for a new audience. It's not about updating visuals (that's what remasters are for), it's about being inspired from the source to make something new.

Remakes, as briefly mentioned in the article, are Re-imaginings.

@Argle: For Disney this may be about PC, but Gunn's firing is deserved. 10 years ago the dude was 41 - should be fully aware of the potential reception of his remarks, especially the lasting effects of a social media platform like twitter. People get fired for much less.

People have the freedom to express whatever they want, even crude jokes. But people aren't free from the consequences of their action and speech, particularly the public sphere. He should have known better. This is how people learn from mistakes - by accepting the consequences - which is what Gunn is doing now.

One thing I learned from the trailer is that many people in the comments make dumb ignorant comments.

No one else is making a big deal about the protagonists sexuality or gender except for the very same people who complain about them. The irony is so lost on those kinds of comments.

@goozmania: nobody mistakes them because they live in japan and wear Japanese garb. Miyazaki characters likewise have large eyes and whitish skin tones, but nonetheless are Japanese. When anime characters are based on white people, you will know based on what they're wearing and where they live, not based on how they look.

@redx555: Silly comment. last time I checked white people didn't have eyes that take up their entire face and ridiculous physics defying hair styles (by your same logic). SAO characters are japanese because - a) speak japanese, b) live in japan, c) practice all of japanese traditions, d) identify themselves and each other as japanese.

I don't really mind whitewashing a cast when you are remaking a foreign film/story for an American audience. But honestly it just makes the film/tv awkward in doing so. You're using the SAO brand but somehow changing all of the elements in terms of characterization and setting, even theme as well (for an American audience). Might as well just make a new thing instead.

@clay544888: I don't think you got my meaning. It's only whining if he had stayed and continued to complain without doing something about it. Clearly he did something about it and quit, so everything hes saying now about being burnt out can't possibly constitute as whining. In other words, if you don't like something, you have to do something about it - and in this case, the director did.
