STOP!!!!!!!! Do not send to Sony. The Gilksy method is a VERY easy but time consuming process that will allow you to repair your PS3. See You Tube. Also download the PDF guide and print it. 1. I tried this and the idiots on the phone have never seen a PS3 before and didnt know what I was talking about. You sure can try though. 2. When you insert the Hard Drive into a new PS3 it will format it, deleting ALL data. After repair you will be able to turn on your PS3 and transfer data to a flash drive and then onto your new PS3. 3. Buy a new PS3 but repair and sell your old one. Transfer all your save data. After repair, my PS3 lasted a few weeks although I think its cause I didnt but enough thermal compound.
Go Slim. Its just a better made console. Smaller chip. Less power. Its silent. I JUST went a week ago because my launch console YLODed on me. I repaired it. 2 weeks later YLODed again. The slim is a new model so I feel like it is better made.
Never heard of anything like this. For one I think the problem came from unproper turning on and off the console. The back button is not meant for turning the system on and off, it is a main power switch. From now on, if you are in a game and want to eject, quit the game first. Then eject. Then turn off the console. If you are playing and just want to turn off the console. Hold down the PS button and turn off console. Do things the right way. I never touch the back switch. You may have to send it in to Sony. This doesnt seem like a common problem.
BTW the YLOD cn be repaired using the Gilksy Method. You tube. Also helps to print out the PDF step by step. I recommend after YLOD, repairing the system, recovering your data and game (which will be stuck inside the drive) and then selling the console to Gamespot. Although, if you are new to PS3 and have a new Slim console you should be just fine.
Can you switch out the hard drive on the slimline PS3? If so, is it the same 2.5" SATA HDD that the regular PS3s use? Im wondering cause I had heard that you can switch the HDD but I was looking at pictures of the slim and I didnt see where the HDD goes. I am going to buy a slim but I want to keep the 250 GB HDD that I put in my fat 60GB PS3.
So I found that the Gilsky method is pretty effective for repairing the YLOD. Interestingly enough, I have seen that quite a bit of people have got it will playing Modern Warfare 2. I think for now I will attempt the repair so I can get all my save data, back it up and buy a Slim. Dont really need the PS2 backwards compatibility.

actually, it is not the number of gb it has, but bytes. The 60 you see actually means 60 million bytes, which when converted to gb will equal right around 55GB. Thats not that far beyond scientific explanation... What a scam. They should label it appropriately
OMG play them ALL trust me. I would play Cod 4 Modern Warfare, MGS4, Uncharted 1 THEN part 2, Killzone, and then you gotta play Bioshock and Dead Space.
