A wonderful return of Lara Croft that will leave you wanting so much more. Well, I have recently just completed the game, fantastic. Thats what I would say if I had to write a one word review. For those familiar with the Tomb Raider games you will be pleased to hear that controlling Lara has become much more easier and fun. Since Crystal Dynamices (Gex, Legacy of Kain) took over from Core they completely changed the gameplay. Lara does not have to do a short run up to jump anymore, the places you visit are not so blocky and are now much more realistic. This is because the grid based system is now gone.
The length of this game depends on wether you are someone who loves obtaining 100%, if not then you will be dissapointed by how short this game is. Amzingly short, infact the last level can easily be done in under 5 minutes. However if you wish to obtain everything then you will find yourself exploring levels over and over again to find hidden relics or you might choose to do the time trial. Doing so unlocks quite an impressive amount of content. There is artwork, bios, object models, pistol upgrades, a massive amount of costumes and quite a bit more. So there is a reason to replay this game again and again.
Combat is quite fun, theres nothing tricky about it, you simply carry two weapons at a time, up to 4 grenades and can do some unarmed combat. Like kicking, rolling into an enemy, jumping on his head the shooting him as you land, jump kick an enemy. However this is easy, even on my first playthrough at hard difficulty I rarely had troubles. The real challenge does not lie in the puzzles either. Sometimes it will be hard to figure out what to do but very rarely. The real challenege simply lies in obtaining 100%.
As for the story, well it is an interesting one. Usually in games the story is straight forward or one with some twists thrown in. This is different, it seems to be about 3 seperate stories that are all connected with each other. I will not go into to detail, but its about a famous myth, an incident in Lara's childhood and another incident that happened 3 years ago. The story is pretty interesting, got a bit complicated at times and is confusing at the begining, I thought I might have miised something because it was so confusing. It clears up later with no plotholes at all and is a nice story.
Unlike Lara's previous game, this one returns to raiding tombs. You will travel all over the world to Peru, Ghana, Antartica, basically exotic locations mostly. And they all look really good. I was so surprised with the graphics of this game, at first I was a bit sad this willl not be on the PS3 but now that I have seen what it looks like I am impressed. They fabulous, I can not find words to express how amazing they are but I will say it is much better in gameplay than on screenshots.
Everyone wants to know about sound, well you get a great soundtrack that in some tracks is really cultural, like the main theme you hear on the main menu. Sound effects are great and make the game feel amazing just as much as the graphics, you also have two buddies that talk to you by ear piece. Zip (From Tomb Raider Chronicles) and a newcomer called Alister. They rarely help but its fun to hear them chatter, plus it makes the game more fun to hear some funny talk instead of just constantly listening to Lara's footsteps.
All in all, this review comes to an end, I recommend you get this game even if you know nothing about Tomb Raider. The only bad point I can think of is that the story mode was to short, but everything else is great.
