[QUOTE="PoppaLemming"] [QUOTE="Mordred19"]Sam is not complex enough. If I have to read the books just to understand him, that's a fault of the characterization of the games. I should know him just from playing, but I realized that the story and characters of Splinter Cell games is low priority to Ubisoft, as evidenced by the terrible pacing and gaps in the plot. I disagree. Sam is more complex than Snake. Snake is just your average super soldier you see over and over again in video games. The Metal Gear story might be complex but Snake isn't.
I disagree with your disagreement. Snake has been a more complex and intersesting character since MGS1. He used to be a drinking, anti-social, depressed nihilist. In MGS2, he takes on the responsibiltiy of eradicating Metal Gears from the world. Listen to what he has to say in MGS2, he talks about deep concepts like the nature of memories, people's identities, motivations, and peoples' search for purpose. Does that seem like a cliche? He has had to deal with killing his twin brother, stopping his own death from a dormant virus in his body, and going rogue from the US government and joining an independant organization where he was later labeled a terrorist. He doesn't follow the government, not since MGS1. He fights for his own beliefs and morals, no one elses. He doesn't take orders, and he follows his own missions. He is an inspiring character, who really has more to him than a simple motivation like:"Those are my orders, I will do whatever it takes to complete them."
Most of those same things can be applied to Sam. And with this new Splinter Cell, we will truely see what Sam's really about when his own government double crossed him and is hunting him
