People are evil, not religion.  I am christian (though have my own beliefs too) and am probably one of the most sane and least violent people on the planet :P. as bashar said we can all become just as great a person as jesus, buddah or mohammad. through kind deeds, acts and having unconditional love for one another we all can grow. jesus, buddah, mohammad and many others have showed us the way now we just have to emulate them. we are them they are us we are all one and we all can become one with our creator once again.
