Sega Saturn (Yes, Sega made a handheld) competed with Nintendo GameBoy and it was the first 16bit handheld. The Saturn was light years ahead of the Gameboy, it had color but it also uses four AA batteries. NeoGeo did decent in Hawaii and Japan, I'm not sure if it sold any good in North America. But yeah, the Saturn lasted for years but then Sega pull the plug and Sega dropped out of the handheld business forever.Click_Clock
