I was going to say this is a picture of my games area, but i think the word area suggests there is some kind of order or organisation. Neither of which will be found here. I decided the best thing to call it is simply my games "mess"

E3 Aftermath

This blog was supposed to be about how awesome i thought resident evil 4wii edition was, however there are far more pressing matters to hand.

As everyone knows (or should know), last week was e3. This has been myfirst year of following the gaming press seriously, i did see the
nintendo press conference last year and was aware of all of the goings on at e3, and so this year i was naturally excited.

Ive always had a special place in my heart for nintendo, there was a time when i was a serious nintendo fanboy, like serious serious fanboy, i have since seen the light and grown to despise fanboys and all of there kind. Nintendos e3 show last ear was mind blowing, it was at that
point everyone knew the wii was serious business, and could actually be alot of fun. Then along came december, and the wii launched, we all
played zelda and then we just stopped playing the wii all together. No games have come to europe (apart from resi 4 of course) and the wii has had very little play time. But it was ok, last e3 shown us a wealth of great games, and when those games finally came the wii would seem less like a waste of money.

This brings me to e3 2007. The nintendo conference. The shame. The agony.

Nintendo have said from day one that the wii wont alienate the "hardcore" audience. As far as i can tell, thats exactly what they have
done. There show was a joke, firstly we get treated to a demo of a game that everyone is already quite aware of, the game is even out to buy now in japan, im of course talking about phantom hourglass. Its not that i dont like the look of the game, i love it, i cant wait to play it, but i
have been waiting to play it now since gdc last year, at e3 i expected a little more. We where given release dates for the key games mentioned at last e3, mario galaxy and smash brothers.

The worst part of the show was all the garbage about how vastly the market has changed, and inviting all these "new age" gamers out to play
games. The type of gamer who clearly loves the idea of the shows main announcement, wii fit.

It not that i dont like the look of wii fit, im sure ill buy it, and im sure it will be quite fun, i hate the way i feel like i was tricked into
buying a wii, i thought i was getting a games console, when in-fact im getting an exercise machine. The new controller was enough for me, and
alot of "hardcore" market, we didnt need the rest of this change.

With all that being said im still looking forward to the key wii releases, but not half as much as im looking forward to the key 360
releases.

Sony offered the biggest surprise of the show. For me i was always going to end up with a ps3, simply because of my love for the metal gear
series, there was a few other games i liked the look of but i never thought for a second there would be so many quality looking games coming
to the system. Before e3 i was going to get a ps3 just because, now im genuinely excited to get my hands on a great looking machine, with a
great set of games. Altho this "price drop" sharade was in my humble opinion un-necessary, and typical of sony really

Capcom, Puzzle Quest and the easter holidays

As most of you will have already seen now, Capcom have released the trailers for there latest wii flavoured resident evil games. I always thought that resident evil 4 was a perfect fit for a wii game, and because that was obvious to me, i assumed it would be for capcom too. It apparently was but i have to say i didnt expect a port. I'm not sure how long the information that umbrella Chronicles will be a "lightgun" game has been known but it was a massive surprise to me. I just always assumed that when the wii got an exclusive resident evil game it would be based on the amazingly successfull resident evil 4 architecture but given its own little wii'isms. This "lightgun" news has caught me off guard, and compared to what i expected i am disappointed. Of course the previous resident evil lightgun games only reinforce this disappointment, i find it truly worrying how there is more than one game in that series, and that capcom might think that this is the kind of news that will excite people. In-fact i believe the only reason its not called "resident evil survivor wii edition" is because it will put people off.(credit goes to 1up your for that last comment)

Despite all this, Umbrella Chronicles could be a great game. My memories of lightgun games aren't all terrible. There was a time when me and some friends would all crowed round virtua cop machine and play for hours, also the time crisis serise has always been fun, and finally there is house of the dead, proof that a zombie based lightgun game should be very very fun. But making a game like this for a home console isnt the same as making it for the arcade. Dropping a coin in and picking up the gun just doesn't translate to most home consoles. The lack of home multiplayer was a factor that i often found irritating, TV size and quality until now was mostly worse, the price of these extra lighgun peripherals and finally a living room just doesn't have the same atmosphere as an arcade. The wii however changes this. The wii has already proven that it is one of, if not the best local multiplayer consoles, and the wiimote will work fine as a lightgun, and maybe this would be a good reason for nintendo to release this lightgun case that we have all been seeing pics of since e3 last year. I don't think i need to say it, but i will just in-case capcom hasn't realised this yet, lack of multiplayer will absolutely kill this game.

Looking at the survior games, i actually think the problem was too much freedom. They wernt arcade games, i don't even think they where trying to be, but umbrella Chronicles needs to make this game in the vein of a game like house of the dead 4. House of the dead 4 even has motion controls, and multiplayer (obviously). Basically, what I'm saying is, if Umbrella Chronicles is anything like a home verson of house of the dead 4 then it will be an awesome game, but untill i see more i cant help but be hesitant. Moving on

I picked up a copy of puzzle quest today. The platform on witch i chose to purchase is something i gave alot of thought to. I ultimately wanted the psp version, however my girlfriend expressed an interest in the game, and unfortunately she doesn't have a psp, only a DS. She said that she would pick up a copy once she got back to manchester, so based on this i chose the DS. To me the multiplayer opportunities the DS presented outweighed the graphical improvements of the psp version. As for the game i was pleasantly surprised. Im a huge fan of puzzle games and occasionally i enjoy an rpg or two, so puzzle quest seemed like an awesome games premise. When i first started the game, i wasnt as instantly hooked like i had expected. in-fact at first, i just don't think i "got" it. I carried on playing though, certain that i would eventually like the game, and sure enough after i gained a few levels, bought a few items, learnt a few spells and completed a few quests, the games charm gripped me. And charming really is the best way to describe the game. But don't take my word for it, i believe ryan davis has recently reviewed the game, so check it out.

The last thing i wanted to write about was the past few weeks that i have spent at home for easter, and yes its also about games. When packing i had no trouble deciding what consoles i would be bringing home. I brought the handhelds and my xbox360 and an assortment of games. They have blocked the ports needed to connect to xbox live where i am currently living, so when i came home i used a free month card i got with project gotham 3 and gave xbox live a really good go. It took me a while initially to update all of my games and mess around with settings, but once i got all this out the way i really enjoyed the service, its definitely worth paying for. All the features it offers are intergrated totally seamlessly and has some seriously great games.

However my interest wanned as for some reason me and all my friends became totally hooked on pokemon, and a shocking amount of my time went into that. About a week into this easter break i nipped back to manchester for a da. While i was there i picked up a copy of dragonball z on the wii. Being a dragonball z fan i was always going to like this game, but being a fan of the budokai serise i was also destined to be disspointed. The fighting in the game is really quite fun, although allot of it seems tacked on and the blocking is just stupid, once you give the game enough time it become second nature and can be quite engrossing and there is a stupid number of players for you to play with, so just trying to unlock them all will keep you playing for a considerable amount of time. The reason i was disappointed with the game was the story mode. I really cant discribe just how terribly it tells the fantastic dragonball z story, it does the anime no justice at all.

This brings me to a topic ive wanted to discuss for a while now. Just how massively disappointing the wii has been. Ive got all the current consoles apart from the ps3, and the only one that i was ever truly excited about was the wii, it was the only console i attended the launch for and it e3 last year, it was the console i had picked for the winner of the next console war. Now im not so sure. At launch wii sports was everything i expected, and was basically a demo, Zelda was clearly a gamecube game and while the wii features where a nice touch, i really dont think i would have missed them if i played the gamecube version. And everything else i have to say about the wii i mentioned earlier. So basically the wii for me so far as been, wii sports (pritty much a demo), zelda (a gamecube port), and dragonball z(a ps2 port). If that doesn't say enough then the rest is in the release schedule. Those of you who are from america should just be digging into super paper mario, however no such luck for us europeans, and so far there is no date. The rest of the games im looking forward to also dont have any solid dates, not even for the americans. The only games i can hope to see before the end of summer is super paper mario and maybe resident evil 4. super paper mario started out as a gamecube game and resident evil is being released on its 4th console. Is this all the wii is? i new way to play old games? where is all this innovation that we where promised, what happened to the promise of consistant first and third party support. Im certainly not suggesting that i want games to be rushed out, quite the contrary infact, they need to make these games perfect becasue we simply cannot take much more crap, but someone at nintendo needs to look at this situation and just see how terribly wrong it has gone, and they need to make sure that this doesn't get repeated next year.

Anyways thats all. Ciao

[Edit] for some reason i cant get the text to wrap, so untill i figure it out, sorry i guess

My Okami review

I finally finished okami and my review. You can find the review here In the end the game took my 48 hours, and i have to say i enjoyed every second of it. The end of the game is just shockingly sad, when i actually finished the game my sister was in the room so w/e feelings i had about the utter sadness where supressed. But later on when i was telling my girlfriend what happened, i could hold it in anymore. I just broke down and cried like a baby. Im 20 years old. I could hardly belive it. Anyways, check out the review, as im sure you can tell i highly recomend it.

Im not suprised this didnt work out

So maybe i was a little ambitious saying i wanted to finish okami and write a review in a week, Its not like i didnt try, in a week ive had 46 hours of game time, and its not even like ive been getting stuck. The problem is that game is just so so long. Im confindent the ending is coming up soon, ive got most the weapons and all the brush strokes and now would be a very nice place for the game to wrap things up. I do think ive given some serious effort to some of the side quests, but the world is so large i just feel like im missing out on somthing. Im not going to say a date for this review, i am going to say it wont be around today, but soon. I promise for real....

The brink of destruction

For a while now ive been giving serious consideration to finding a job in games journalism. Its always seemed like the perfect job for me, and by perfect i mean its a job where you play alot of games, and tell people why you did or didnt like them. However, I realise that the description i just gave is nothing but a pipe dream. Any form of journalism comes with a number of factors that could easily decimate the dream in seconds. Its not an easy job, making youself imune to your own preference and writing to accomodate for all of your readers from a purely unbias perspective hardly seems easy. There are a few other problems, like the one that was raised when alex reviewed robocop. How do you give a fair review for a terrible game, i mean how far into the game should you go in such a situation. Can anyone imagin playing a game you hate and finishing it to the extent where you can review all aspects of the game. Painfull. I have my own set of problems as well. Firstly im dyslexic (id like to thank the spell checker) and writing has always been hard for me. The next problem is online games, my current situation leaves me with all my consoles offline. FInally money, Im a student living off a student loan, that has already got me a Xbox360 and a Wii, how much further can it be streched? But if i where to get to some ripe old age and im working in some stupid convenience store or any other crappy job, I would hate myself for never trying. So here i am, Today is the UK launch day for okami, and after my class finished me and a certain Pablo Phoenix will be heading to manchester town center to purchase the game. My intention is a simple experiment. So far i dont have too much trouble writing blogs, and im doing well with most of my university essay's, so now id like to try my hand at reviewing games and okami will be the test subject. Okami has always looked like an amazing game to me, and from reading a few reviews back when it launched in the US i dont think i will be dissapointed. The problem is resisting giving a game like okami a 10. I am horrably over critical, however if i like something im more inclined to simple overlook any minor problems i have for the overwhelming fun of the game. Im sure ill work somthing out. Anyway im gonna have to go to class. Check back in the next few days for the review.

But at what cost?

As as routine now every friday my girlfriend comes round to my room and stays over. She says all weekend and goes back on sunday. This is how it has been for months now. However this week, The cheeg (my girlfriends nickname, ill save it for another blog) decided it was time to clean my room. I think i need to explain the "state" of my room first. My room is what i like to think of, as an organised mess. I have all the "stuff" i need infront of me, and everything else is just....a mess. so back to the cleaning. I hate the process of my room being cleaned, because simply i like my mess, i know how to handle my mess, my mess will do me no wrong. Cheeg see's it differently. So she cleans, while i sit on my chair and protest, but still she cleans. In the end it was done and the room became so tidy and perfect. I have to admit, once the room is clean, i do like it, but the problem is (and the reason i dont want it clean in the first place) that i like to keep it clean. And thats what brings me here today. No tv remote. The Cheeg didnt tidy it away though, it was me last night, but as i cant just put it on the floor, its just else where now. You see i live in student accomodation, witch is the same as saying i live in a box. The lack of tv remote in this box means i cant play my xbox, and i cant get the almost free 1000 points phantasy star universe offers. The result, a poorly writen blog, by a poor and confused boy. enjoy
