It's far from cool, but the most moving and thought provoking documentary I've seen is Night and Fog. It's about the Holocaust and is one of the most graphic films you will ever see, real or fiction.
If we are going with bands that are still producing albums, I'll go with Against Me! (althoughtheir last album blew hard.), Leftover Crack, The Lawrence Arms, and Bomb The Music Industry!.
