Japan might not matter as much as they did in the 90s, but they are still significant enough to decide a close console war... and they're the reason why PS3 eventually sold more than 360 worldwide last gen. As long as Xbox is a total nonfactor over there, Sony will continue to win.
I'm probably in the minority, but I am very disappointed in FF15 and it'll be the first non online mainline game I won't buy. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, I've been playing it since the NES days... but I love it because its the premiere turn based JRPG out there. Turning it into some generic hack and slash action game completely goes against why I love the series... there are so many of those games out there already, why would you change Final Fantasy to that? I've always been much more supportive of Square Enix than most, and I've been backing them this whole gen, but I can't support them moving my favorite series into a direction of gaming I have no interest in.
Can you really call being in 3rd place this gen as "Succeeding"? Without the Japanese market you can't fully control the gaming industry. 360 outdid PS3 easily in the West but the Japanese market doomed them for 3rd place.
The biggest problem is that Japan just has a different idea of what makes games fun. This is the country where Bioshock Infinite recently got outsold by twice as much by Photo Kano Kiss, a Vita game where you stalk girls and take pictures of them. They just don't care about the big AAA Western titles that dominate Xbox.
Good luck with that, Microsoft. On 4gamer (one of Japans biggest gaming websites), they actually had higher hits and more comments for the Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate announcement than Xbox One. They just don't care about the Xbox.
Well looks like I'll be quitting gaming soon enough if it keeps on going more and more casual like this. I already don't play Nintendo systems since they've ditched traditional controllers, I don't want to ditch Sony as well.
@xolivierx Japan cares a lot more about handhelds since they have smaller living spaces, spend more time in transportation, and quite frankly, too many American games dominating the consoles. Japan dominates the handheld market so it appeals more to the Japanese. It might seem surprising, but games like Mass Effect and Halo are as niche as quirky Japanese games are here.
