I also remember those times, but I think those times have changed. Sometimes the developer needs to throw in a good tutorial should the fighting game be extremely deep. I remember buying BlazBlue, and being somewhat new to fighting games, and I had no idea how the game worked because of a lack of a tutorial . I mean I eventually figured the game out, but it took a bit longer than it should have, considering I'm no good at fighting games. I do love them though.
It's quite fair. The times have changed. Perhaps if Gamespot had its old review system, and gave the Gameplay score a 9, things would be different. Anyways, sure the gameplay itself can be a 9. But there are other problems you can't ignore in a game. How the hell does this game have no replay support? Why not? Every fighting game with some sort of depth should have this.
As for giving a game a lower score because you don't know what you're doing, that's also fair. What if a person who is absolutely new to fighting games and wants to learn, can't because of a lack of tutorials? That's no fun is it? One might argue that it adds to challenge, and there shouldn't be any hand holding, but in some cases it can just add to frustration.
Everything is a piece of the puzzle man. Sometimes reviews are nitpicky for good reason. For example, I'm looking at some of "The Bad". One thing that I would agree with is this game having no replay support. It should be COMMON PRACTICE that every single damn fighting game, even SIMPLE ones with at least some sort of depth.. should have replay support. Even the simplistic Naruto games have replay support. Come now.
Minimal education tools in a fighting game can be a problem for those who may be new, or not very good at this genre. It can be a pretty bad experience, having to learn the game yourself by constantly losing.. As for story, we all know that its an important aspect of the game. A terrible story in an otherwise terrific game can make it a mixed bag.
@TwinSnakes1989 Are you seriously going to pin Duke Nukem on Gearbox? You know that game wasn't their fault right? Do you know how many devs worked on that damn thing over the years?
I've always wanted a PS3 ever since I started high school. I'm in college now, and I still have yet to obtain one. I instead, bought a 360 in high school pretty much for Halo 3. I enjoy the console itself, and its my main source of multiplat games for my lack of a PS3, and the fact that I personally think that some online features such as the party system, are superior to the PS3's, in which to my knowledge, still lacks this kind of system. Correct me if im wrong
I never minded paying $50 a year, that is until they marked up the price to $60. My budget has been tight, and I just haven't been able to afford my one year since October, so I've been purchasing one months. I'd love to see the service go free.
