How? If he had never shown his face, no one would've cared. He basically looks like a fan character. He's slow as hell, his voice is grating and has absolultely no personality. He was basically made out of a dare to make a Sonic character more one note than Shadow. Not to mention he debuted in one of the worst Sonic games ever.

He ranks up there with Espio and the Babylon Rouges in the "what's my appeal?" characters.

You don't see Mario turning into a werewolf or using a sword or shooting guns because Nintendo knows Link is the one who uses a sword and who has always used a sword. The only time Mario had a "gimmick" was his water pack and even that didn't compromise the integrity of the platforming to much. Sonic is always compared to Mario not Link.

The problem is Sega wants to expand Sonic as a series but has no idea how to do it so they just come up with ideas like swords and werehogs and toss them up to see if they stick. It wouldn't be so bad if they were implemented well but all too often they take away from the reason most normal people play Sonic games, to run really fast through great platforming stages.

If I wanted to randomly mash hordes of enemies over and over again, I'd play God of War.

If I want to hack through enemies with a sword, I'd play Zelda.

If I wanted to shoot aliens, I'd play any random FPS that came out this week.

I play Sonic games because I want to run fast. All these gimmicks take away from that. If Sega would find ways to use these things in a way that didn't take away from the speed, it would be ok. Look at the water craft from Sonic Rush Adventure, it tended to be slower but it worked because Sonic can't swim and needed to get to neighboring islands.

why are you comparing sonic to mario? they are two TOTALLY differint kinds of characters! sonic is not trying to copy mario or any thing like that.

but back to the topic. sonic's worst gimmik i think is not the werehog. because the werehog was not a gimmik. it was just a way to make a game that would sell and sega knew people wouldn't like it! his worst gimmik has to be him as a rocker in sonic under ground. unless we mean just games then it has to be him as a knight.

also I;m going to explain why sonic needs a car. BECAUSE IT'S A KART RACING GAME! that should answer the question as to why sonic needs a car in sonic all stars racing:P
