Tournament photos + Day 2 events

We've posted some pics of the first two days' action on the tournament page: http://www.gamecenter.com/e3tournament.html

Yesterday had some amazing action. Lauke, the UT2004 world champ (WCG 2004) came over and challenged eVeNfLoW, and it was a close 1-0 in overtime. Falcon (#2 in the recent Euro finals, ahead of Lauke) went 3-2 against eVeNfLoW, scoring the decisive point in the final seconds. To get a more true pro format, we did an exhibition match with Lauke and eVeNfLow that was an action packed 10 minutes, 9-6.

To underscore how good these guys are, I have to mention Lauke went over and beat Fatal1ty 11-1 yesterday, right after the exhibition match. For being the first to beat Fatali1ty in his own E3 booth, Lauke picked up a cool $2,500. Then he came back for our finals and won the $2,500 daily Fragbox prize.

This made for great entertainment (filmed live by GameSpot Live in a couple 10 min blocks) and drew sizable crowds. We had a nice followup today, minus the pros. I was really glad to see crowds hanging out, enjoying the competition.

GameCenter E3 Challenge Day 1

Today is the second day of the GameCenter E3 Challenge. We had some great competition yesterday. 32 guys and girls at the show stepped up to challenge our champion, EVENFLOW. He was totally dominant on DM-1v1-Roughinery, but some did better against him than others.

The top score was a grand total of _1_ but a few guys got a lucky frag against him. So the daily total was 3 to 308. The action heated up in the daily finals, which decided the $2,500 1st prize we're giving away every day. We had all four of our top seeds from the challenge through the day come back at 4pm for the finals. After semi finals and a 3rd place bracket, we kicked off the grand finale--a best of 3 deathmatch--and it was great stuff.

After a tense couple of matches on DM-Rankin, James Lee beat John Palamarchek and won the $2,500 voucher for a fragbox. John and our other finalists went home with great gaming accessories from Logitech. And everyone who steps up to compete in the challenge gets a ticket for Sneak Peek access to GameCenter, something all GameSpot complete members can also look forward to in the coming weeks.

Pics coming soon.

On the show floor...

There are only a few days left before the start of E3 2005, the first time we'll be showing GameCenter publicly. It's the debut for a project I've been working on for quite a long time, so it's quite a relief to be able to finally talk about it openly and I'm really looking forward to hearing the reactions of those at the show.

But doing show floor product demos is really a small part of what we have going on next week. The GameCenter E3 Challenge is really the star of the show. Pulling off a tournament on the show floor requires a ton of preparation, and at this point I'm confident that it'll really turn out well.

Somehow we were convincing enough to get approval for a great bunch of prizes, so we'll be giving away a $2,500 voucher for a Falcon NW Fragbox every day of the show. Plus a bunch of Logitech prizes for the other top places. All in all, it's a little bit better than the typical E3 t-shirt.

It should be a good event. Most of the day will have contestants challenging eVeNfLoW*dx. He won't be a pushover, but those who do well at that stage can have the comfort that he won't be in the day's grand finale. That'll be a fair fight, pitting the top four finishers against each other in finals brackets. Having the best UT2004 skills will bring home the $2,500.

So if you're at E3 and have the will to compete, come find us at the GameSpot booth. Those at home can tune into GameSpot Live for a few live spots.

As for GameCenter itself, there was some more detail in a GameSpot news story yesterday, so check it out. Of course, the Sneak Peek is coming soon, so GameSpot Complete members don't have to wait too long for a hands-on look.
