For me, it's And Then There Was Silence by Blind Guardian hands down. I'll also give a shout out to runners up Miklagard Overture by Turisas and Mana by Equilibrium.

Light of Day, Day of Darkness, as with some other very long songs that maintain their awesomeness throughout (Flood anyone?), really don't meet the criteria for "epic" as I think of it. "Epic" to me is music that conjures to mind huge battles and heroic quests and legends and victory and all that nonsense without sounding hoaky. Or in the words of Luca Turilli, "WARRIORS BATTLES SWORDS OF STEEL AND MAGIC TRAGIC DESTINIES!!!!!"

That's no slight at the other guitarists on the list, at least not all of them. Reign in Blood is still the best thrash metal album out there,Shad4k
I just heard Possessed's Seven Churches for the first time and stand corrected. Well, it's pretty damn close.

[QUOTE="Shad4k"]This question would take hours to answer properly. Here instead is a very informal list. Agalloch Alcest Anamanaguchi Boris Camera Obscura Converge The Decemberists Detektivbyran Dropkick Murphys were kicking ass by 98, but most of their significant works were this decade. Drudkh Ensiferum Equilibrium Explosions in the Sky Finntroll Flogging Molly High on Fire Isis La Quiete Mastodon The Mountain Goats. Go ahead, try and tell me All Hail West Texas wasn't his career high. Muse Pagan Reign Peste Noire The Shins Sigur Ros count because Agaetis Byrjun was 2001 and really marked their coming of age. Split Lip Rayfield The Tallest Man on Earth The Tossers Those Transatlantics Turisas Windir Аркона Калевала Стары Ольса Тролль Гнёт Ель It was hard limiting this to only 35 bands. Shut up.-Misanthropic-

Which of them do you listen to most frequently at the moment?

The Decemberists, Mastodon, and Peste Noire, but only because they've put new albums out this year. http://www.last.fm/user/Shad4k

pfft, I saw Megadeth with Bodom and In Flames last year. Nothing like a bunch of washed up old guys all sharing a stage together. Jesus, can I call Bodom that already? They maintained the tradition of closing with Downfall, In Flames are fun live no matter how much they suck, and I got High on Fire and Job for a Cowboy opening, so it was a pretty sweet deal. Two amazing bands in their prime today and a lot of nostalgia.
british steel is garbage, listen to sad wings of destiny , stained class ( my personal favorite ) , and painkiller.. and your opinion of priest will quickly change.. the 70's were their classic albums, the 80's were mainstream garbage, the downfall starting with british steel, and their 1990 album painkiller was a great thrash album.nimatoad2000
I will definitely grab a few of those, thanks.

My favorite song and my favorite 10+ minute song are conveniently the same. "Flood" by Boris, clocking in at 70 minutes and 29 seconds. In fact I think my top 5 songs might all be over 10 minutes....

No doubt about it for me, out of those five Dave Murray and Adrian Smith win hands down. I'm not going to say they're the most skillful duo on that list, but they have what matters most - that knack possessed by only a few lead guitarists (Alexi Laiho and Andre Olbrich come to mind) to play more than just notes. Maiden has the instrumental spirit to wield a whole arsenal of emotions. They can create epic battles, dark suspense, triumphal victories even if you take out Harris's completely relevant lyrics and and the heavy metal savior that is Bruce Dickinson. That's no slight at the other guitarists on the list, at least not all of them. Reign in Blood is still the best thrash metal album out there, and Metallica were no joke in their earlier days. Megadeth on the other hand are all skill and no creativity if you ask me, an absolute bore. Judas Priest, well I didn't know anyone even remembered their guitarists. We're talking breaking the law breaking the law WAA breaking the law breaking the law WAA WAA Judas Priest? Can't say I remember British Steel much, and I haven't heard anything else, but I distinctly remember being bored with them. If anyone has a recommendation I'll listen to it.

I'm going to skip six pages of discussion for the moment and just say what's probably already been said. People are inherently violent, and the extent to which that violent nature can express itself is constrained only by the prevailing mindset of a socially cohesive body. So far as religion is used as a calling card for violence, it makes little difference whether that religion is Christianity, Islam, Nationalism, Racism, even Freedom. It takes a very difficult level of awareness for a population to avoid falling prey to these things, and insofar as a much smaller percentage of the Islamic world has waged this sort of religious war in the last decade than the Christian/Nationalist world, despite the latter boasting better education systems and personal opportunities, I would venture to suggest that, speaking now of traditional religions, Islam is one of the least violent.

They say war is the last resort For me it's the only way I've tried reciting poetry It suits me better to slay. They say war is all we know If only that were true No matter how I work my schedule There's always other things that I do But excuse me now, there's a tank at the door And that slave's head just rolled across the floor You try to say something, but that something is puke Set off a nuke. GWAR are so dreamy.

We are steering away from away from religion, tradition, and pride-based decisions and more towards reason. This is the most right direction America can hope for right now. I say yes.
