I remember way back when the DS was being released. Well, it was more like a month or two before it was released. Screams of "Gimmick!" and "It'll never last!" plus the occasional "PSP will crush it!" was memorable. I, myself, wanted a PSP instead of a DS. Thank the lord my brother and I got two DS's instead of a PSP. Here we are today, looking at the DS's sucess. System of the Year 2 times in a row by EGM, many incredible games. And before it was called a gimmick.
Enter the Revoloution...aka the Wii. Before the new controller was revealed, I though that it would be like the 360 or PS3. Boy was I wrong huh?
The second I saw the controller design on the cover of my EGM, I thought that it was absurd. Idiotic. There was no freakin way I was gonna buy this thing. "It's a gimmick!" cried the fanboys. "It has no chance next to the PS3! They launch a few days apart!"
Fast forward to today, where the Wii is sold out 8 months after launch. A product sold out after 8 months? Incredible. The fastest selling system in the span of time, from launch to 8 months later? I would think so.
As you all can see, you shouldn't doubt Nintendo. Yes it makes some crazy moves, but as you can clearly see, most of them are sucessful. If the DS and Wii are "gimmicks", then hey, I could use a few more gimmicks in my living room, gladly.
